Goodness... I just grabbed a GPD Win 2 handheld from a computer shop the other day and this video popped up in my mind. Man, it's WILD how far we've advanced. Back in the day these portable consoles struggled to run NES games, whereas modern similar handheld units can often run as far as Playstation (if not a bit beyond!)

This thing and similar devices were cool for their time. I think they've mostly been replaced now though by Android, specifically JXD is doing a lot of these kinds of consoles.

This handheld has turned into an amazing open source handheld. Still because of its rarity and high price point I suggest a PSP, JXD, Yinlips, Archos Gamepad, GCW Zero or Dingoo. There are mulitple varieties of the JXD and Yinlips Consoles. There is also an Archos Gamepad 2 and a few varieties of the Dingoo.

Good lord, this little nugget. Remember people discovering this video/channel in 2023 and beyond: these types of gadgets that's struggled to emulate NES and gameboy games died so that consoles like the 3ds and eventually switch/steam deck could live. This is a part of portable gaming history
@christo93014 жыл бұрын
For those that don't know, megaman and super mario rpg use extra chips in the cart and therefor will run slower. Also, keep in mind that the community that supports the gamepark consoles is a very active and friendly one and the issues that some of these early ports will be quickly worked as (as evidenced by the quick fixing of the gba emulator). The Caanoo is a great machine, you won't be disappointed. I own 3 gamepark consoles and they are all great and the oldest one (gp32) still works great

The Caanno has come a long way since this video. It pretty much smoothed out most of these problems from what I can tell. Plus PSX emulation is pretty good, although Puzzle Bobble probably isn't the best example lol.
@SauceCaptain11 жыл бұрын
Since this review was put on KZbin the Caanoo has had several updates for the emulators. In particular the SNES and NES emulators are fantastic, better than any I've ever even found for PC. For that matter now there are good emulators on the Caanoo for basically everything up to PS1. It's sad that Game Park died before we got to see what this little system could do. It had the potential to really be something special, but as it stands I'm glad I have mine and that there is still such strong community support for it. I have a Gemei / Dingoo A330, JXD PSP clone, emulators on my phone, and a few other Chinese knock-offs like the PVP etc, but the Caanoo is easily my favorite.

Its funny seeing how well the Caanoo has grown over the years. It now plays PSX great, as well as all the other emulators, and even has backwards compatibility with Wix and GP2X apps, and a much bigger llibrary. While the FunGP site is now down, theres plenty of things to download for it, like PrBoom and the SOR Remake from all around the internet. Im now about to get one for my B-Day with the wifi dongle and im excited for it!

I have both a GP2X F200 and a Caanoo and both are pretty cool machines. My only criticism about the Caanoo is the positioning of the speakers - they're at the back and I tend to cover them with my fingers while I'm using it - this is a problem, even for small hands and it's annoying to have muffled sound, plus the sound is projected away from you instead of towards, so you're missing out on some volume. I would've preferred the speakers to have been positioned at the front like my GP2X.

The community for this device is very active and we should see a lot of new releases and bug fixes as well as a lot of games being ported by other systems. There is a psx emulator being worked on which, from early reports, seems to be at or near full speed. I would highly encourage anyone who likes classic games, emulators and homebrew games to pick this machine up. You can also pick up a used wiz if you want to go cheaper and can live without the wifi and accelerometer. You won't be sorry.

By the looks of it that is standardized korean connector,and GPH is korean,so its not really a proprietary connector, just not that common in the US. Before the rise of mini- and micro- usb this connector was commonly used on phone made by Korean manufacturers if you go to thrift store you'll likely find a few old ac adapters for samsung and lg phones that have that connector.

@cocokitty55 Overclocking is running the CPU faster than the default speed so you can get more performance. On portable devices, you will burn battery life faster. Also, if you go to far, it can cause damage, but this is rare.

Hi Tweeterman, love your videos great work. I have a few questions, first - I already own a Wiz - which I just LOVE, only the build quality leaves a lot to be desired. As early as 2 months owning the Wiz, it began to have problems, ( the power won't stay on without the power cord being plugged in constanty), my L shoulder button no longer works, and as early as last week - the + Volume button doesn't click when I press it. ( so no SNES menu access) Would you recommend me getting the Caanoo?
@dojix9614 жыл бұрын
I think that the volume control has been lagged because it has a setting of sound for every position on the slider. Because of this, it runs through them all as fast as possible to get to where you're positioned.

I had a GP2X Wiz a year ago. I loved the genesis emulator and it seems to have also openTyrian ported. I don't know if I should buy this one. I didn't use my Wiz much, maybe because I didn't like the controls and the screen. And not being able to play SNES games properly which this doesn't seem to be prepared for. It's hard to decide. Also as I can see there, the GBA emulator had the sound fixed, but what about games like Golden Sun 2, Megaman Zero 2 and DKC3? I'd really like to know.

cont.... How promising is emulator development and/or updates to Wiz emu's being ported over to the Caanoo? I love having SNES games that actually run at full speed on a handheld, enough that I'd even consider replacing my Wiz just so I can play them. There's just so many options on the Wiz as far as emulators go - that I could justify buying another one. You seem like someone who could answer many questions about both devices 'cause you own them. Should I get the Caanoo?

You sound like one those people that says something like "If you don't like [insert band here]'s music, I'd like to see you do better!" You don't have to be able to do something to criticize a bad product when you see it. The NES emulator is basically unplayable. How is that better than not having it at all?
@BaconStein13 жыл бұрын
The hardware, interface, and external design all look great, but the software could use a bit of work. This probably looks like the best one of these devices I've seen so far, possibly better than the PSP. I'll probably just stick with portable clone consoles for now, but I'll try and keep an eye on this one.

@Hosunlee8912 жыл бұрын
ok, if you are looking to emulate the NES mostly, just spend 75 bucks on the Dingoo A320. The dingoo is much less powerful, but it is supported by a HUGE community online. The NES and GBA emulators on the A320 are pretty much flawless. SNES is nearly flawless and the others are pretty good as well. Instead of shelling out like 160 on the Caanoo, spend less than half and buy the Dingoo. Look it up, it's awesome.

We don't release content under an open source license because we want appreciation, we do it because we know that someone, somewhere will pirate our content otherwise. This is 2013. Piracy isn't just big in China anymore. And emulators are one of the hardest types of software to develop, so don't tell someone to make an emulator if you can't even do it.

I was thinking about getting a caanoo but it seems it's ermulation abilities are a bit poor at the moment. The cheaper and weaker Dingoo can run Snes games better than this! Whats GBA emulation like? @XXXXNanoXXXxxx Pretty sure the general rule of thumb when dealing with emulators is if you want decent emulation (playable) the machine running the emulator should be about 10 times as powerful as the emulated machine. NGP might be able to handle the PS2 and a GC at beyond crappy speeds, but it will probably not be worth looking into, unless an emulator is built from the ground up specifically for the NGP (years of work if you expect good speeds).

I'm not realy smart when it comes to that.

I dislike volume sliders in general, since on the DS Lite you have to pretty much use your fingernail to get it how you want it, otherwise it goes shooting all the way up or down, and you either have the volume screaming at you or totally silent. I bite my fingernails, so it's a pain in the ass. How I miss the little gear things on the GBC...
