Very good craftsmanship. That is a very well built muffler. I have a big mower with a V twin engine. It has its stock muffler. Still kinda loud. My question is if I built one of these as a second muffler would it quiet it down significantly or just change the tone? The summers are really hot here so I want to get an early start but don't want to bother or annoy people as I rumble by.

Thank you. I don't think you will get what you want. Maybe put perforated pipes in this middle section and insert some muffler packing material.

@@GPGarage1 I ordered an AP muffler for a Civic with basically the same design as yours. Started it up and slid it on to the stock muffler exhaust pipe and it is like a mute button was pushed. The older I get the more I want my equipment quieter. When I was younger I would be like let it scream. Lol funny how that works.

Just got it all welded and tested it. Wow what a mute button.

@@GPGarage1 very true. I mean it's not electric level quiet. You hear the push rods and valve ticking plus the hydraulic pumps when running. But when you mow it's just the humming of the mowing deck. It's nice to not have to wear hearing protection. Plus the neighbors like me alot more. Planning on welding in a reducer from 1.50 to 1.25 as silly as it sounds it makes a noticeable difference. It goes from a quiet deep base tone to puff puff puff puff.

What kind of drill bits do you use on stainless steel?

If you can get them, 8% cobalt. When drilling stainless, go slow on the speed, and *do not let the bit dwell.* Give plenty of feed, so the bit cuts and does not rub. Rubbing will work-harden the steel - which will make it *much* harder to drill. Also, use a good cutting oil, and keep the bit well-oiled. Finally, keep your bits *sharp.* Dull bits will rub and work-harden stainless in a hurry.

@@dennisyoung4631 Yes i've used cobalt and they are superior to SS bits on pretty much everything. As you say, speed is the killer. Cobalt bits aren't cheap mind you. Thanks for the good advice! Lots of skill and patience required :)

Finally a soundtrack that I can listen to lol. Nice muffler man, I'd love to hear a before and after on your vehicle. Thoughts on packing it with steel wool? Suppose that would make it louder, and seeing that you opted for a chambered configuration I'm guessing your aiming at noise reduction.

these chambered mufflers are all based on the Helmholtz tube development, it is very delicate to taylor the sound the muffler will produce. there is engineers that spend their carrers tuning mufflers for automotive industry so it is a very good idea to use an original muffler specific to a vehicule to duplicate a home made muffler to avoid indesirable effects as droning.

@@GPGarage1 thanks for replying. Looks tough to get the stainless sheet to wrap around the muffler but I think I’ll try it. I’m thinking of making a muffler for an e46 m54b25. Have you made one for that engine? Do you have any tips or maybe best way to make the inside for nice sound? I was thinking of doing a perforated pipe inside and the rest empty but I think it might drone at low rpms
@GPGarage1
@GPGarage1 Жыл бұрын
@@EmanuelFilms For the muffler, You don't need a thicker sheet than 1-1.2 mm, I worked with 2 mm because I had one. I'm not on the m54, I made it for the m52tub25 and if you're going to leave the middle resonator, then you can make the rear stright-through muffler, perforated tube with glass wool.
@EmanuelFilms

@@GPGarage1 thanks. Yes the plan is to only change the rear muffler. See what it’s like, then do other changes if it needs to be changed
