I know this is a late response but there actually was a sister analog to Iceland on the Pacific mid ocean ridge prior to 49 million years ago(Ma) the associated flood basalts that composed Siletzia and Yakut formed along the East Pacific Rise as a result of the formation of the Yellowstone hotspot 58-56 Ma suspiciously timed at exactly the same interval where the Icelandic hotspot and associated North Atlantic Large Igneous Province(NALIP) formed. On that note Iceland's location along the Mid Atlantic Ridge isn't down to chance either as the northern extension of the Mid Atlantic ridge didn't extend that far North. It was in fact a failed rift related to the initial break up of Pangaea that got reactivated leading to Greenland Rifting away from Eurasia 56 Ma. On that note to help visualize this the channel splitting Greenland from North America is also a failed rift that developed further from the same original rifting on Pangaea. So effectively North America and Eurasia only started to really separate in the far North around 56 Ma with the main Pangaea split dividing Gondwana from Laurasia.

The biggest real life example of a continental rift failing would be the Keweenawan Rift in my home state of Michigan. The actual rift extends from around St. Louis around the Upper Peninsula, then drops down sharply southwards and ends somewhere near Jackson Michigan. The result is a massive deposit of Copper with some Gold and even less Silver. It formed back when North America was part of Rodinia and subsequently healed and was buried in sediment. Then, the glaciers followed this weakened scar and cut Lake Superior's basin. The lake still follows the exact path that the rift took through North America.

I noticed that failed rifts are only drawn branching off of the main rifts. Is it unlikely/impossible for other failed triple junctions and rifts to form e.g. at the northern coast of the map shown at 26:00? would the successful rifts relieve the mantle pressure that would otherwise create other rifts? Or are they being left out because they're low-impact and being handwaved?

Well Artifexian's old videos are still here about how to arrange winds, ocean currents, biomes and the like, I think there was a comment on the North Pole circle since that's basically the same thing (a featureless expanse of ocean where the wind can just run rampant). You could check those out. Either way, what you say *is* possible but it may have the effect that you're not going to get some of the more interesting/ life-sustaining biomes (if you only have land around the poles, then all your land is gonna be fairly cold, and with the whole world surrounded in ocean around the equator, that may raise its albedo a little as well and reflect sunlight. You could make it a warmer planet to compensate, but in that case you're not gonna have some of the colder biomes... you get the idea.) If you're interested in the actual biomes and climate zones of your planet you could check out the old videos on how to arrange those and those could give you an idea of what you'd be missing/ how you could compensate etc. I also have an impression that you may get gigantic hurricanes this way, since hurricanes can keep on growing as long as they have a permanent influx of warm ocean water - hurricanes lose force when they hit land. The coriolis winds are eventually going to sweep a hurricane toward the pole of the hemisphere it's in, which basically means no place on that coastline is ever free from hurricanes the way, for example, the US West Coast is. It's just gonna be, hurricane forms near the equator on the North side, goes West for a while, then finally sweeps up to make landfall wherever it feels like. Same thing goes for the Southern hemisphere. All of that being said, if you have enough patience, eventually he'll make new videos on all of these subjects. And now that you've posted this question, I'm curious to see if he'll include it.

I have now just started trying this, after watching the various videos on this subject and working up the courage, but I'm running into a question about the rifts. Aren't they supposed to go all the way... somewhere? To form an entire tectonic plate? I'm saying this because, when one of these pieces of continental crust moves into one direction, there's going to be a place on the planet where the tectonic plate that continental crust is on will subduct, and in that place, volcanic island chains will also be formed. However, the polygon lines that you use for rifting are just lines. You're not breaking up the whole crust of this planet into tectonic plates. Is that possible with Gplates?

An oceanic world like that would probably have some land, just not a lot. 5-10% maybe? If it has fairly small and many cratons, that land would then spread out fairly sparsely over time, so you might get some quite long supercontinent cycles...
@Jpteryx2 жыл бұрын
The supercontinental cycle means that supercontinents will form and then break apart again and again. It's easier to start at a time that happens to have a supercontinent because then you only have to worry about one piece of continental crust to begin with.
@trishapellis2 жыл бұрын
@@Jpteryx To add to this, the ways in which tectonic plates move in general means that you're always going to get *some* land eventually. As is explained in the videos following this one, subduction causes volcanism which creates land, evolving from the islands along the Bering Strait to the islands of Japan to the islands of Indonesia. That said, the only requirements for tectonic activity, as far as I'm aware, are a hot and active mantel in your planet. As long as you have that, you're going to get tectonic plates regardless (unless, as is mentioned in the video, you have more than 60% continental crust...). So I do think you can have an ocean planet with tectonic plate movements... however, by the time life starts evolving, I do have the impression some land is going to exist already by that point because as I mentioned before, tectonic activity means volcanism means continental crust being formed by volcanism. Then again, the more water there is on your planet, the more a volcano would need to grow to rise up above the sealevel and become land. You could basically say that your ocean is just so deep that even Mount Everest would barely reach the ocean surface, as long as you account for that with the density of your planet and the climate (considering distance from the star and albedo) and such. Aside from that, land starts eroding as soon as it sticks out above the water's surface, so any land that has formed previously could have eroded away in the moment you want to focus on in the planet's history.

Jupiter doesn't have plate tectonics. I don't understand why you expect to find an answer to this question, in the comments section of a video that doesn't have a single iota to do with the subject of your question. James Geary, the person you're responding to, is directly asking Artifexian a question that Artifexian is likely to know the answer to, that is directly related to something Artifexian says in this video, and Artifexian might include the anwer in a next video because it is relevant. Go to Google and type "Why is there no life on Jupiter", read the websites you find. Then type in "Why is there no life on Uranus", and so on. Can you use a program that everyone can access, gplates can only work on 3 computers
@ArtifexianАй бұрын
GPlates is free and works on Mac (x86 and arm), windows and linux. That's as accessible as it gets for this class of app.

Can GPlates emulate a donut world ? I'm serious for this question i'm working on one of these world
@Aerostarm2 жыл бұрын
Perhaps. But tectonic activity is different on a donut world
@Jpteryx2 жыл бұрын
No, and simulating tectonics on a donut world will be very hard because plates will have to deform whenever they move any direction other than east and west.

This program is a piece of work that most of the time failed to compiled and failed to launch when I using Rolling Release Linux distro and on stable distro can compile and launch successfully in really random occasion. And I still don't know the condition that make this software usable in each distros. Having all it's dependencies doesn't guarantee it will work.
@autochton2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I had similar trouble with v2.1. But seems v2.3 is a lot more up to date and using supported dependencies.
@sophustranquillitastv44682 жыл бұрын
@@autochton Version 2.3 is look like it's working fine at the first glance. I installed it on Arch Linux around August last year. But since then I have to update the system as if I didn't update in a long time something in my system will break when install something further, as it's Arch Linux nature. I launch Gplates again after that and this time it didn't work anymore as the library version got updates. And even when I recompile it's failed at 42%, not successful like the last time. Library version after update should still support the program if I could recompile but I can't. So, that's make the program essentially unusable in rolling release distros. So I have to install it inside Ubuntu-based distros inside a VM and then extracted from it, as the only distros the developer of this project supported are Ubuntu based distros and it even use dedicated DEB for each version. To be honest, I'd like the developer to port this program to Flatpak so that it can be installed in all Linux distros without maintaining this many different binaries.

Dude, patience is a virtue. You don't need to go and spam your comment into everyone's replies if it's not relevant to the original comment to get your question answered. Us question answerers will go through all the comments on the video anyway, and spamming just makes your question to raise a flag in the youtube system and risks all of your comments being deleted
