I’m so very glad to hear him directly addressing the less than ideal fact of his being cast for the role of Lili as opposed to a trans actress; I think that he brought a lot of integrity to the role and the fact that he was cast probably did make the film more widely received than it might otherwise have been. But I am very grateful to him for acknowledging the sensitivity of the situation and recognizing his privilege within the system.
@averyprofessionalmieke6 жыл бұрын
@TAYLOR BELL that's not the point. this is actually a widely known problem since a lot of film makers pick cis actors instead of trans actors because they "don't look trans enough," which is extremely transphobic and stupid. I personally love that he got cast because he portrayed the character so brilliantly - like all his characters - and since the whole transition, beginning with Lilly having a male body, is portrayed, it does make sense to cast a male actor. BUT it's very important to addresses the issue and I love that he did because, as I said, a lot of film makers are quite disrespectful about this, if not necessarily intentionally, and aren't giving real trans people the representation they deserve. have a nice day x

@@gLeeksFF I don't think the problem is non trans people being cast as trans characters in general. The issue is casting cis actors because trans actors "don't look trans enough," which is an excuse some filmmakers have used in the past and that's just offensive. I totally agree that Eddie was the perfect choice, since the film obviously portrays the transition and so it made sense, also, I don't think many actors could've played this character as perfectly as he did 😊

is that what he meant when he said he didnt know if it were the right thing to do because i thought he meant it in a way of "im not 100% sure i agree with trans and all" so i came scouring through the comments to find out what he meant but by your comment does he mean he didnt know if it were right in terms of he is a man and they shouldve gotten szomeone who is part of the trans community to part take

Does that mean that only cis actors/actresses can play cis characters? Trans actors have to wait til there’s a trans role?

Eddie Redmayne did such an amazing job as Stephen Hawkings in The Theory of Everything. When I saw for the first time I loved and I cried. When I was watching the movie I didn’t who Stephen Hawkings was until I searched him. I also loved him as Newt Scamander in both Fantastic Beasts movies.

I don't think it's so much that he regrets it, but rather that he truly acknowledges the complexity of the issue of him as a cis man playing a trans woman contrasted with his own personal journey.
@femmefuntime5 жыл бұрын
I think he regrets it because he recognized the problem with casting cis men to play trans women and cis women to play trans men is that it encourages the belief that trans women are men and that trans men are women. (And when transphobic beliefs are encouraged it hurts trans people, whether that’s through unfair treatment, bigoted legislation, or outright violent attacks)

I'm kind of on a similar page with Eddie on the Danish Girl. On one hand, that movie was my first exposure to the idea of being trans, and helped me come out. On the other hand, years later, I recognize the importance of trans people telling their own stories. So it's a difficult situation. Glad he acknowledges it too.
@FleurDeCersier6 жыл бұрын
Luna So you're trans? Because I would like to hear what a trans person thinks about my thoughts. Because what I thought when I heard about this debate is that you obviously want to make a movie as realistic as possible and back then they obviously didn't have hrt. So I thought it would make most sense to have a male actor in the lead who has all the features that are typically deemed as male or not? Sorry if I miss something about it. I'm not trying to be offensive, I'm just trying to understand
@booboo84605 жыл бұрын
@@FleurDeCersier I agree. It makes sense for a cis man to play a cis man transition into a trans woman. It just wouldn't be as realistic. And Eddie is so nice and so respectful towards the community I really don't see how anyone could hate on him for such a wonderful performance.

I have a question: does a cis person playing a trans person maybe depend a bit on research for the part? Because I personally don't think that cis people getting cast for trans roles is not usually a good result as it sometimes comes off as insensitive/reinforcing stereotypes, but I wonder if putting more research and time into the role is a bigger component. I'm not trans so I have no bearing on this subject and was curious and mean no disrespect.
@Denturess4 жыл бұрын
Femme Funtime so then what do you think if they casted a cis woman instead of Eddie Redmayne?
@nadinel56356 жыл бұрын
Such a considerate interview, I love Eddie's thoughtfulness. I think that the decision to cast him in Danish Girl was right, there were many scenes were a biologically male body was portrayed, this sadly could not have been played by a trans (or cis, for that matter) woman. Not to mention his phenomenal acting.
