I thought the main villain was probably one of the best that I've seen in any anime. He not only tried to wreck the system but also questioned the hero's motives and ideals as well, and I actually kind of agreed with his ideas if not his methods.

I agree, he really was a great villain, the series wasn't boring because of him and he was heck strong and smart overall even tho he was crazy, I thought he was really interesting won't forget him, tho the way he died was stupid, I expected him to be smarter as he escaped death many times

Shogo makishima is not just interesting because he's smart, charismatic and a skill fighter. He's like an individual human from our modern world fighting against a world where individuality is stripped.

@@animefan133 I think he much rather accept death by the hands of Kogami, a person with his own "free will" and an opponent he acknowledged rather than live on as a cog in a machine together with the society he despises the most. It was indeed quite an anticlimactic death compared to other beloved anime antagonists but definitely one of the most philosophical ones. That's what makes him so good.

I love Psycho-pass season 1 to pieces. This isn't the typical action-filled anime. Instead, it digs deep into the psychological aspect, which I love. The famous shounen anime like Naruto, Bleach, etc are at times are thrilling and emotional, but I find that they lack the dark psychological twist that make me rethink life. The characters have distinctive personalities that set them apart; most of all, they just feel so real, like human beings, not anime characters. The music here are just absolutely fitting and amazing. I ended up downloading many songs and listen to them on repeat. This is my most favourite anime as of late.

Same here. I was glad they did it though, because of what it made the villain. I'd have to say that he's probably the best villain in any anime I have watched so far. But I haven't watched that many, so my opinion might not be that valid.

Reading the comment section and watching the video seems so weird to me... I love the main actor Akane, starting from the first episode, so much. She isn't someone you necessarily identify with, but one you can relate to and understand through the whole series, who develops and doesn't stagnate, but also keeps her personality. And those drowsy eyes, they're awesome!

Why is it that so many people don't like Urobuchi, it's strange that one minute they are bitching about the usually; Harrem, Fanservice, school and Moe. Then a Post Cyberpunk series comes along with it's own art style, no fanservice, not set in a school, nearly all the characters are adluts and it's not a harrem. And a wave of complaints come in about his characters and the way he writes.
@TheAnimerunner
@TheAnimerunner 10 жыл бұрын
That's funny, cause I was thinking the same thing. If you put those 2 opinions together, then many people apparently don't like anything.
@KetenReviews
@KetenReviews 10 жыл бұрын
People give Urobuchi too much credit. Yes, he doesn't write harem, sexual fanservice heavy shows about school and moe, but that doesn't make his shows good. He doesn't really have a talent for writing characters for the most part and while he has good ideas, the execution is usually rather poor. Madoka is a deconstruction but it's so IN YOUR FACE about being a deconstruction that you forget to actually analyse it. The characters in Madoka are poor, just archetype moe girls for the most part(Also dark magical girl shows existed before Madoka, so it's not like that was an original idea to begin with). Fate/Zero's spirits are just historical and mythological figures, he didn't write them, he just used them. Psycho-Pass had themes, but they were never explored and as such the series lacked depth or complexity. Just because a series takes itself seriously and isn't about school moe girls doesn't automatically make it good. Urobuchi isn't a bad writer, but I wouldn't exactly call him good either.
@TheAnimerunner
@TheAnimerunner 10 жыл бұрын
Keten Zima From a highly analytical standpoint, I can see those arguments. However, when comparing to other anime that have aired in recent years, I think Urobuchi's stories are worth mentioning, especially to new comers in anime.

***** They are good introductory anime yes. I will agree to that. However saying that they are good compared to anime in recent years.. Kind of says a lot about modern anime doesn't it. Not that we don't get good anime anymore, we do, it just seems more rare these days. Every season is 80% school comedy moe. Drives me nuts.

You know what my favorite part of this series was? When the main villain and one of his henchmen are conversing with one another after releasing dozens of anti-Cybel system helmets into the general public about what kind of science fiction dystopia they're living in and creating, referencing multiple different authors and the type of work they've generally created and how it relates to the situation in the show. +MegaFreddy25 pretty much what drew me to Makishima from the get-go. he has a different sort of sympathetic backstory though...... he's probably clinically sociopathic, because he never feels any negative emotions committing his crimes. so you can tell the sybil system could only have worsened his personality disorder, which is what makes his character a tragic one. and Light's tragedy is different - because he isn't a born sociopath. he feels guilt when he first starts using the Death Note. his tragedy lies in his descent into sadism and desperation.

*SPOILERS* What made this show so enjoyable for me was Makishima. He is one of my personal favorite villains in anime. He reminded me of Johan Liebert (Monster), but with more appeal. I found his calm, collected demeanor to be a high-point in the show; and though I was perfectly ok with his death, I am somewhat worried for the 2nd season without him. I can already guess that the 2nd season will be aimed at the removal of the Sibyl system, but I am a bit concerned... :/

Logan Hollis That does not really help actually. It was not just his ability to kill, it was his overall character and persona. He was intelligent, philosophic, and turned people into horrible criminals with just his words. I thought he strayed away from many of the classic villain archetypes. Being honest a lot of villains kill a lot of people, but not a lot of villains accomplish this using civil minded civilians.

Cameron Wallace Not only that but Makashima is in many ways right. His methods are horrible, but his opposition to the Sybil-system is grounded in very valid arguments: Even before the great reveal ( you know which) I already felt that Makashima was right. Plus, its not like Akane was too thrilled with letting the system continue, and its possible a third season will have them take down the Sibil System, hopefully

@aceotaku
@aceotaku 8 жыл бұрын
Not Legato to put it as simply and concisely as I can, makashima has multiple reasons: he wants to take down the sibil system due to believing it weakens and undermines human will and integrity, but he also does it due to feeling alone due to the system seemingly not recognising him as even existing, so his goal is also a sort of revenge, and thirdly he does what he does because he genuinely IS a psychopath who finds enjoyment in hurting others. His motivation is far more compelx than "The sibil system is corrput and I msut do evil things to bring it down": he IS a very evil man who jsut happens to have a justified end goal

The villains of both shows are very similar in their goals, however their methods of achieving that were different in such a way that made the two seasons feel different. Makishima was almost playing around with Sibyl and the police while Kamui was more straightforward. I just preferred the way Makishima did things, using calm criminals to prove a point like a game, rather than Kamui's way of using insane citizens to simply achieve his goal

Makishima had charisma and got people who wanted to commit crimes the ability to commit them. Kamui uses medicine and has a similar charisma ability except he gets them to commit crimes without them initially wanting to. However I like his this guy is straightforward and shows a different way Makishima could have gone with it.

The ending was the only bit I didn't like. I still rate it 10/10 and put it at #3 on my (admittedly modest) list of favourites. As for what was wrong with the ending, something I remember was that the music really didn't fit with the scenes, which made it hard to focus on what was actually going on. Then, it was just made up of a few scenes that felt slightly disjoint to each other, including quite a bit of cleaning up at the end. The lorry crash was animated notably poorly, too (given how well Senguuji is animated when blown up). I guess what I expected was just a more compelling pursuit of Makishima with music to match the rest of the series. And some more quotes!

*Shinsekai Yori* shows a utopian village system in a setting that looks like feudal Japan, no electricity, the only transport is boats, there are only oil lamps and the like. The twist? This is set 1000 years after the ancient civilization, which is the current us. We start off with middle schooler in a school setting learning and there's a mystery element that some students disappear. Slowly this dystopian world is unraveled before you and realize that nothing is as it seems. The hell does this have to do with Psycho- Pass? If we're going into sci-fi territory, I might as well present this hidden gem to the more mainstream crowd.

I like your points on this video and you make very applicable critique to a lot of it's bits and bumps. However, i do not agree with the un-immersive world as i felt very invested in the universe they created, why or how you ask? Well that's simple. The scenes that captured me into the world were the parts where akane had to face off against shogo for the first time. The intensity of that scene was instantly captivating and really sold the world to me. The second part was when shogo and his right hand man designed the psycho copier to replicate any nearby citizens psycho-pass. As we first get a glimpse of what it is capable of we see the masked man walk into a chemist and instantly start killing people, this of course rings a peculiar interest as to why the sibil system isn't detecting his hue. Later we see that same man brutally attack a poor defenseless woman out in the street with a hammer in front of hundreds of people, did they do anything? Not at all. Those are what really sold me on the world and what it really is. The prophetic and philosophical ramblings of shogo also really helped to characterize the general theme of the world as well. 8.0 is a very reasonable score in my personal opinion i myself would give it an 8.9 but that's just me.

The reason why it feels more like a preview is because while it has themes, it doesn't actually explore them. As you said, the guy who was locked up at the age of 5, that would be cool to explore the psychology around it, too bad we'll never get that. I also had a huge problem with the characters, as you said they were not fleshed out enough, but on top of that Urobuchi never really did anything with them. He just gave them ideologies and left it at that, not actually giving them personalities with some exceptions. Akane is the only person in the entire show to question the sybil system... Why? Why is she the ONLY one? It doesn't make any sense. On top of that the main villain while having a master plan, why is it that his plan B is far more easy to accomplish than his plan A? Why didn't he just do it to begin with? It was never explained and never will be. As such the show only got a 5/10 from me unfortunately. I feel like it could have been a solid show, but compared to Ghost in the Shell which had all these themes that were all explored with great detail and realism, it just falls flat on it's face. I don't think it's bad, it's just sort of... Lazy... There is no complexity... It's just sort of a generic sci-fi show with good ideas and bad execution.

I'm disappointed that Ark didn't share his personal opinions on Makishima Shogo's placement as a villian and really only mentioned him once for his english voice actor's portrayal of him. I wanted to know what he thought of him as an antagonist for the show because I personally thought he was great. (I'm a bit surprised it didn't score a little higher, but what can you do. Hopefully some of the remaining questions will be answered in season 2, which I am EXTREMELY excited about :D)

The extended edition actually gives more character insights than the normal version. We get see more of how Makishima thinks and acts, and other characters who were brushed to the side. (Such as Kagari and Ginoza.) Either way, It's still an enjoyable experience and should be watched, no matter the version. Season 2 however.....has no replay value. Season 2 started out really well though, but after episode 4(5 tops) it was just, *WTF* am I watching? Episode 6 felt like a rehashing of Episode 11 from Season 1, which made it that much worse. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate the 2nd season,in fact from a standpoint, I enjoyed it a lot, despite it's cheesy story. My ratings: Season 1: 8.5/10 (Great design, likeable characters, amazing artwork and background, but has poor character development for side characters) Season 2: 6/10 (Amazing design, intriguing story,interesting villain (till episode 7-11) started well but ended poorly, very few likeable characters, and no replay value.) Movie: No comment till I've seen it.

I honestly am scared of a possible Season 3: think about it. Akane's become expendable The Sybil System's becomes a monster Mika's trying to crush her senior Kougami's definitely out of the picture what else would there be for the fate of these characters. For real, I think that I am more scared of a terrible fate for the characters rather than having a bad cannon sequel.

***** In sum, character personalities flip flop all over the place, and the story is filled with plot holes. If you enjoyed it, that's fine. However, from an objective standpoint, it is not a good show.

Ryan Cesar There's a good reason why characters like Shu personality keep flipping around. Shu is a type of character that want everybody to not hate him, but after hare's death he still want to help, but did it in a bad way. Later on he learned his mistake and forgive his friends. In my opinion, I think Shu has one of the most realistic personality.(I can relate to him) The reason why I said shu is because every time I see people bashing on the characters in guilty crown it's always shu. I don't see that much plot holes other than inori "transformation" and the ending(but I like the ending tho). Don't get me wrong I used to think it's meh because of how much people bashed at it, but rewatching it and thinking about it, I think it's a good anime. I think of it as my top ten. I think people just hate it because of how shu acting like a dick in the second half.

wasn't their a tom cruise movie that explore this theme call minority report
@bw8696
@bw8696 9 жыл бұрын
evilmickey100 To be fair, Philip K. Dick did write Minority Report Back in 1956. It's more or less a staple of sci-fi. Borrowing from it is excusable, especially since Psycho Pass used the ideas it took to explore new themes. Minority Report played on the theme of predestination, and asked the question of how much of our fate is really in our own hands. (For instance,[spoiler alert] that one bit in the movie where Tom Cruise opted not to shoot the guy he was destined to kill, but then immediately found himself over the body holding a still smoking gun.) Psycho Pass is about the benefits of new technology, and how even a perfect system doesn't truly improve the quality of life of the people living under it. I'm simplifying it, of course, but my point is that it's unfair to consider Psycho Pass a cheap Japanese ripoff of Minority Report. Both of them use a common element to explore a different theme in a completely different style of storytelling.

criminal238 Not AOT. I think Clannad did very well, though.

AOT did do very well, but I don't think it's the highest.

I thought Season 2 was good. The best part was Akane and her team on viewing the Sibyl system and how Akane counter the system itself. The average part was the villain Kamui itself. He's just not as interested like Makishima. Even though Kamui motivation is believable but his arc just kinda boring.

I'm only on Episode 11, but I freaking love this series; what I enjoy most so far is the villains, and no I'm not talking about the main one shrouded in shadows, the ones that make up each episode; I love all the different M.O's and their backstories prior to the murders too;
