GRAB SCORPION? BAD IDEA!

Hi Ben, I don't comment often but today I felt like I have essentially something to thank you for. I had a sort of trial day at a new job today, so that the company could see what I can do and to see whether I fit in with the staff. I did all the tasks in half the allotted time but the longer I worked, the more I realized that I actually hated half of the stuff they made me do. In the end, I had the courage to decline the job, even though they offered it to me but I just couldn't face working in a job that I didn't like. I will rather face my fears and follow my dream to try and find a job that makes me happy and that I truly believe in. I think watching your videos and hearing you talk about following your dreams helped me take a big step towards following my dreams today. I just wanted to thank you for that.

Congratulations! That was a bold move and, based on what you said, also the right one, probably. Decisions like these seem to be the ones that shape your future the most, because not only did you decline this particular offer and force yourself to look elsewhere for something more fulfilling, but also every time in the future when you are faced with a big life decision, you will come back to this moment and think about what led you to turn down the job offer. In other words, the important decision you made at this point will stay with you and act as a reminder of your core values throughout your life.

When you said you were meeting with Dan, I thought you meant Dan the Director. Which Dan recently injured his foot? (Not talking about Dan the Director's cutting his foot when you were surfing ages ago.) It's not a competition, but SP is the coolest friend-smart, skillful, laid back, friendly, great sense of humor. Scorpions are not insects. They have 8 legs. You didn't count the front legs with pincers. Scorpions are Arachnids, closely related to spiders, also in the class of Arachnids. I'm glad you didn't get stung, but I wish you'd leave wildlife alone. That's one of the advantages of a camera: you can capture wildlife on film (or digitally) without bothering it.

I agree with you on leaving wildlife alone. It's not about potentially causing physical damage to a living creature (I'm sure the scorpion is fine), rather it's about having a certain level of respect towards all living things. Sure, as a person who eats meat and contributes to polluting the environment by living in a western society, it definitely is hypocritical of me to say that "everyone should respect wildlife", and I'm aware of that. There are a lot of things I could do much better in terms of showing that respect. But I do my best to always leave wildlife alone when at all possible.

Joonas Puuppo Thanks for the reply. After I posted, I had second thoughts. Since Ben didn't get stung and the scorpions apparently weren't harmed, should I have said anything? Ben puts a lot of time & work into these amazing vlogs. In appreciation for all the things he's doing, maybe I could just be quiet about a few thing that on rare occasion bother me. Making a seal go back into the water to get away from him is more objectionable than picking up a scorpion for a minute.The seal came ashore because survival is tough and it needed to rest and conserve calories; whereas picking up a scorpion probably had no effect on its short life. I eat meat, too, but, for example, I don't eat veal. We make our choices. I tend to view wildlife in a different category from domestic stock that wouldn't exist if they weren't destined to be dinner.

alwaysuseless Personally, I think that as long as you are polite and rational it's totally ok to say it if something bothers you. Constructive criticism is a key element in how progress is made, and I'd imagine ***** appreciates that kind of feedback, even if it's not a big deal.

Joonas Puuppo Ah, as for being rational, there's one thing I fudged: I said wildlife could be filmed without being bothered. That's usually true, as it was with the seal. But under the circumstances, we got a much closer & detailed look at the scorpions, because Ben held them up to the camera. Just seeing them scurry away pales in comparison with seeing them closeup. And picking them up by their tails near their stinger added a bit of dramatic tension.

The kind of bacon you use for carbonara does make a difference, because what you need is actually guanciale (similar to, but actually not bacon). Also you need pecorino cheese to make the egg stick better to the spagetti. Sorry to be picky, but I'm Italian and Carbonara is my favorite kind of pasta.

Hey Ben! Heard in your vlog that you and Jeremy are coming to Austin, Texas!!! Okay so here's advice. Texas weather is CRAZY and changes within hours to be sure to check that ahead of time. SXSW will be INSANE!!! but you'll love it. Congress, 6th, Lamar, and Rainey street and streets to look out for. The food is the best!!!! Try as many food trucks and local coffee shops. Austinites take pride in our beautiful city.
