If there are any weaknesses in this it’s Nagano’s fault. He DOES NOT UNDERSTAND “forward momentum” in slow music for singers. Never did. Nor do most contemporary conductors. Jeezuz. Oh that we had Toscanini or Cleva or even Donald Voorhees or Arthur Fiedler today. Those men UNDERSTOOD what singers needed from an orchestra and a conductor-a “cushion” of accompaniment that DOES NOT DRAG.
