I did dual enrollment (it was called PSEO - post secondary enrollment option) for my junior & senior years. It helped me graduate with my ADN at 19 and started working as a RN at 20. It saved me lots of money and my employer paid for my BSN/MBA.

My oldest took just a couple of DE classes (electives) and it was a nice way to get used to expectations and figuring out college with still having support from mom and dad.

Great tips! I never would have thought about not having an email since in our house at 13 we sign them up for one and open a checking account. But I will keep that in mind when moms are asking me questions. We are in Arizona and I have a senior who completed 2 classes through GCU and a Junior who has completed 3 classes through our local community college. It was extremely helpful for us to meet college representatives in person at the homeschool convention so that when questions came up I had already made a contact. And I have many moms through our homeschool co-op and other local fb groups that I was able to ask questions.

Thank you so much for this! My daughter will be starting high school next year at a public school, unfortunately, but I do want to get her dual enrolled when the time comes. I feel clueless in this area, so this was very helpful for me.

So excited for this!!! All weekend I have been planning out my daughters junior and senior year classes, some dual enrollment at a local tech college. I’m thankful for your advice and sharing it with us.

SAT scores can be used as a placement for certain classes. My son was able to use those with Liberty and Cedarville dual enrollment classes.

Great advice Ashlee! We did not do dual credit with any of our children thus far, but our daughter does do college online from home. Very similar experience, aside from the enrollment process of course. We may try it it with our 8th grader when the time comes!

Sorry I have another question! 😂 You’re right that some of us don’t have many people to ask for advice about these things. Have you looked into having any of your kids taking a CLEP exam for certain subjects? I’m wondering if that’s worth it to save money and time in college classes.

We learned from convention to also find out the rules for your prospective college they have number allowances on how many dual enrollment classes where your HS may qualify as a transfer student instead of a incoming college freshman which effects scholarships the colleges may offer.

My oldest is only in 3rd grade, but I’ve already starting looking into this! I believe in California, community college is free for high school students. We’re also with a charter (yes, that’s a whole thing…) so we can also use funds for textbooks and supplies. And, we can use the charter for transcripts, counseling, etc. All of that being said, we might just end up going private so we can ‘get credit’ for apologetics and a more Biblically based education. We also might just ‘add those on’ (even though they’re the most important!) like we balance state standards with our family values. Collegiate sports are a whole other thing I need to look into!

Tip #5. Email account. My kids don’t use social media, don’t have phones of their own, my oldest is almost 16. I set up email accounts for them about 3 years ago that just sit there and I email things to it every once in awhile to stay active and log in. My oldest now emails with my 88yo grandma so that’s kind of cool for both of them. I’m debating dual enrolling him but he’s still a very mom dependent. We shall see, I may start with something he’s interested in. Thank You, for this!!!

Another tip regarding transfer of credits for any college but especially dual enrollment: stick with general education classes that are more likely to transfer. For instance, introduction to nutrition might count as a science credit at one institution but another might only count it as an elective and require the student to take another science. If your child really dislikes science, that might be incredibly frustrating. Florida public universities, also for instance, have special requirements regarding American Government courses and out of state courses aren't guaranteed to satisfy that requirement. It's helpful if you think your child will attend another institution to research those other possible schools' requirements and degree plans if your student knows what they might like to study. Otherwise, maybe stick to very basic general education classes (English, math, psychology, sociology, etc.) and don't have your child take anything they wouldn't be willing to repeat if those courses don't satisfy their future school's requirements.

Random question! Do you know where you found those oval frames? I have two silhouettes of my grandma I’d like framed.

Ever heard of Alex Rider?, we have never read the books but I watched the show on frevee as an adult and it seems pretty neutral, I am going to read a snippet of the book just to be sure

does it matter what classes you take through dual enrollment? I noticed your daughter is taking an elective and an English course.

What did you feel like prepared your daughter the most for essays and research papers? Was there a certain curriculum that did a great job at that? I can only remember writing one research paper in high school and then in college being overwhelmed with the amount of writing I had to complete.

Will the English class count as a full year high school credit? This is a class my daughter would be taking, it’s one semester but we need a full year for high school.

It depends on the school you choose. If she were to attend in person this class would run aug-Dec. so that would be half a year. However, college credits are calculated different than high school. So it’s up to you!
