Back around 2003 or '04 took my burgundy t top 6 speed trans am from Detroit to see my mother and grandparents in western kentucky. Decided from there to take US51 straight down to the front gate of Graceland. Was so surprised to see what I saw. I love the tour thru Elvis's home but the area is something left to be desired. From the back yard at Graceland, along the southern fence row, all you see is dilapidated buildings and a few with blue tarps as a covering for a roof. The whole scene is kinda crazy and my u-toob search brought me here..

It's sad that one of the most visited homes in the world happens to sit right in the hood. Elvis lived in and sang about the ghetto so I guess it's only fitting that his home and final resting place is in the ghetto too. SMH

Elvis did grow up poor and lived in the southside Memphis Ghetto durring part of his childhood and in his teens. Elvis was from Tupelo Mississippi. But the Whitehaven neighborhood which includes Graceland was actually upscale and largely white when elvis bought the Graceland property. Whitehaven began to undergo rapid white flight and decline durring the 1970's as Memphis's south side Ghetto expanded south and took over the area after the advent of school bussing. Whitehaven was rapidly becoming the hood by the time of Elvis death.

Whitehaven is still the relitively nicer part of The southside Memphis hood, however. The state line between Memphis and the DeSoto county Mississippi suburbs to the south is also a very sudden sharp demographic shift along the city's border like no other in the country, save parts of Detroit and some of it's suburbs. To the north of the line in Memphis, TN is nearly all black and to the south in the Mississippi suburbs there is still has a sizeable black population but it is mostly white. DeSoto county and the rest of north Mississippi Memphis suburbs also have much of the area's white working class population, though it can also be found dispersed throughout most of the region, especially in the exurbs and even in a few parts of Memphis still.

@@dollywilson3395 Joel Weinshanker said during Elvis's birthday celebration at Graceland that over the next 5 years the area won't be recognizable which means they have a plan to buy it all up. They have the funding now thanks to the popularity of the new movie to where they can afford to buy up the rundown sections near Graceland. They just made a record $110 million in 2022.

Went there 2016 i still have PTS seriously I was very upset it was a girls trip I drove from Nashville over a lovely man in a gas station helped me get directions out no freeway nothing very dangerous area I tell EVERYONE go stay Memphis $$$$ hotel get a tour bus in happy to see it but rushed out at 4 pm to get out not enough signs on travel sites be warned everyone

The street you turned on at the end of the video is McLemore. You literally could've gone to see the Stax museum about 10 minutes west of that Walgreens on that same street. And the historic HBCU Lemoyne-Owen College was 5 minutes behind it. I won't lie. It's rough over there, but I think you would've been ok.

38116 is Home. Y’all Talk about how bad Memphis don’t understand how close we are. the struggles we go through the violence we see brings us together as brothers not friends it’s different you’ll never understand. Whitehaven (DaHaven) is the best neighborhood in Memphis in my opinion.
