There's no doubting your sincerity but it's quite lengthy. My late Mom (Gracie! ) played the piano and owned just 2 books for her study. 1. The rudiments of music. 2. Smallwood's piano tutor. As the years went by, these two books were split into several sections! These served me to do a job of writing a score for a jazz vocal group, instead of singing the parts for each voice, which was nicely accepted and executed by the conductor. Having been just a regular choir singer for a group leader who was not available. My first score had sharps and flats where they occurred as I didn't have the time to refer to these books for key signatures; which would minimise the number of blotchy sharps and flats. The conductor gracefully accepted my hard labour and called it an open score! Later I got around that and learnt to write the key signatures in the order you did: Sharps - FCGDAEB and the reverse for flats. I am now a senior citizen and must have aged more doing such projects! Hope your viewers will find something more deeper with your videos than just sight reading.

I seriously think that you should be cloned so that every school all over the world could have a music teacher teaching the way you do. I'm a grown man, who's been playing music for my entire life, different instruments (the organ, the flute, the guitar and now finally the piano) and I just recently got a hunch that I needed to learn some more music theory. I've read books and paid for online classes and watched a bunch of KZbin videos, but to be honest, I could have saved both time and money just finding your channel right away. That was a very long way of saying "Thank you". Keep up the good work and have a lot of nice days ahead. Best regards.

When you started doing the Parallel Minor as you CALLED it, I thought wait a minute, relating this to the Guitar Fingerboard, I said that was what I had read years ago, and knew it as the RELATIVE minor of the Major Root note scale. And after I watched you do it, I said yes that is it. Amazing how much someone knows and yet thinks they do not Know. The guitar theory books I have list it as the Relative minor scale. Confusion comes when you find out there is a Harmonic minor and a Melodic minor, and MODES is somethin else to me. i remember reading about Modes in the one book, and it at 1st referred to them as HISTORICAL ASPECT scales as in like more than 250 years ago. Thanks for Easy to understand lessons.

I've been playing guitar/bass for over 2 decades without really knowing why I was playing what I was playing, and lately I've been watching a lot of theory videos but none of them have ever really explained it in an easy to understand way (hence why came across these videos, I still didn't understand). Thank you for showing this pattern, it's the same sort of thing with all instruments. There is a pattern that can be moved up and down the neck of stringed instruments is the same as moving left or right on the piano. The other thing about the stringed instruments is that the shapes are also connected to one another, for example a D and C is the same shape but as you go to D you're just fretting down the neck, just like how F and E share this shape...almost like Tetras pieces that all interconnect with each other and all chords change their shapes depending where they are on the fret board. If we had longer fretboards it would be easier to see the patterns. Every chord is connected and you're just moving the chord patterns around from one key to another. There is such elegance to it all. I'm into to playing and funding new midi based instruments and it might be cool to build something that could be shaped like the Circle of 4ths/5ths around a sphere and some way to go up or down octaves. After watching your videos I'm getting some ideas, especially when you said that the keys nearest each other are often found together in songs. I bet someone out there has created an instrument based on the Circle of 5ths.

As Gracie said it is a tough question to answer but has a lot to do with the move from "just" intonation instruments (like a violin or cello) to equal tempered instruments (like a piano). It's not easy to grasp but if you are interested look up just and equal temperament in wikipedia or google for an idea. It goes *way* back... :)

Wow, you are a very gifted teacher. You explain things in a very simple way. I've tried to understand this stuff from books and never understood the material they way I did after watching your videos. Please continue with your music theory classes. You mentioned the family of chords and how you'd explain when chords from outside the family are used. I've love to understand "barrowed chords" Thanks so much

Something I think a lot of people forget is that the actual base of music is maths. We tune things to 440hz so A4 is 440hz and all of the other notes are just intervals of this wavelength that stack nicely together in ways that the node points on the wave forms meet up and stack in ways that sound interesting to our ears. All the 12 notes are is a way to but some organisation over the hundreds of thousand of waveforms we could be using and then all theory is, is a system to organise these into different collections so that we can make sense of the chaos and create beautiful harmonically balanced sound when everything is added together under those rules Any good organisation system needs rules and the “A B C D E F G always 7 notes, always with their own place” just helps us order the chaos. There’s no reason we couldn’t just call like a C# scale C# D# F F# G# A# C but it reads a lot worse, it doesn’t fit into musical notation because now what do we just mark every single C with a # note? And when you’re marking the #s at the start of the notation do you mark C as # because it’s not always # if there’s a C natural in there? And we’re not even using B and F so do we just totally ignore those spaces on the notation and stack the C and C# notes on top of each other with # marks on every C It makes the notation side of things very messy and complicated and it makes the fluidity of understanding how music moves more of a scale by scale case. It’s just a system we made up to help standardise everything but it all comes down to the base level of maths around frequency and then the system of organisation to actually notate music.

I’m so glad I found your Channel. I’ve played guitar for 35 years and never bothered with theory. So in my later years I’m learning what I shoulda learned long ago. You ma’am are a brilliant teacher. Thank you

Thank you very much for filling in some gaps in my understanding. I've been around long enough to know most of this but have long wondered why some keys were 'missing'. If I weren't so lazy about it, I probably would have worked out the notes and realized that the musical notation was unworkable while the same pitches were contained in other keys (e.g. A# = Bb). Now I know, without having to do any of that tedious work. I also really appreciate your explicit statement of the rules/conventions that apply to key construction. Another one of those things that I've probably recognized but without knowing the 'why'. All of this makes what I already knew make a lot more sense. Knowing the 'why' is something that I find really helpful in comprehension. Great video, Gracie!

I watch your vids and this one really turned on a light for me. I never understood why sometimes a note would be a sharp and sometimes it might be the next higher flat. AND I never realized the double flats and how that effected signatures. I've watched TONS of guitar players claim to know these theories and I now believe they have no idea what they're talking about and should not try to teach these particular subjects. You brought me a very long way in my theory journey with this video. I can't thank you enough. Don't know if it will make me a better player but it DID help with my understanding of music. You have been doing it long enough to have it in memory and I'm not sure I need to memorize it but I see the importance. For instance if we're playing in "C" you can pretty much hit any open string note and it won't kill the chord because the C scale has no sharps or flats. So you can bang away without killing the sound. I play mostly rhythm in our band and this helps me greatly to know that. Obviously that is going to apply in other chords and fills. Keep making these vids and we'll keep watchin girlie! You have a way with teaching I've never experienced....as a flight instructor I can appreciate that a lot.

Thank you, you've untangled so many mysteries in this video, and you explained it all so clearly. I'm a guitar player and tend to think in terms of intervals rather than note names, but now I know where the note names come from. This makes the Circle of 5ths seem like an amazing coincidence -- all the proper key names are shown, flats on one side & sharps on the other, arriving at the same place in a different way. I know it all comes back to intervals, but this reminds me of my college days when I realized that chemistry and physics are very closely connected, and the formulas governing electricity and mechanics are parallel. In other words, I realized all that stuff wasn't just made up by somebody, it all fits together. Music theory is just like that! I also like how you work with the camera, I feel like you're talking with me, making sure I understand.
