Gracie, I have been researching on circle of 5'th and that's how landed at this video and let me tell you, it is one of the best lessons on major and minor scales using circle of 5'th, one reason probably is your natural smile and more teaching less drama strategy, every moment of this 33.29 minutes is worth listening. Sweet. Really love writing out the minor circle part. Your prior major scale video allowed me to figure this out before I saw this vid. I've been trying to drill flashcards (what are the notes in the Gbminor scale?) and I came up with something based on your order of sharps and flats. Bm and Em (the lower notes of the B-C and E-F pairs that are only separated by a half-step) are sharp minor keys as are any keys with a sharp in the name (F#m). Everything else is flat (Cm, Gm, etc [excepting, of course, A which most folks learn early on has no sharps or flats]). Then use the order of sharps or flats to find the accidentals. For sharps go to the next letter (B to C, F# to G, etc.) and that's the last accidental in the order of sharps. B minor means that you'll use C in the order (F,C) so the scale is B, C#, D, E, F#, G, A. Now you know which notes are sharps and how many sharps there are. G# minor means you'll use A in the order (F,C,G,D,A) so the scale is G#,A#,B,C#,D#,E,F#. Flats are similar. Go to the next letter and use the order of flats to note where non-flat notes start and use all the flats up to, but not including, that one. D minor means you'll use E to see that's where non-flats start (B,E [you won't make E flat]) so the scale is D,E,F,G,A,Bb,C. Bb minor means you'll use C in the order (B,E,A,D,G,C [you won't make C flat]) so the scale is Bb,C,Db,Eb,F,Gb,Ab. Now you know Bb minor has 5 flats and what they are. What if someone gives you something crazy like a Gb minor to figure out? Well, here the method breaks down and you have to draw out the circle of fifths to realize that Gb should actually be considered F# so you can figure out a real scale instead of a crazy scale (Gb,Ab,Bbb,Cb,Db,Ebb,Fb). Easier to deal with 3 sharps than 9 flats in a 7-letter scale. But, if someone asks you what the notes are in a real scale then you can use the order of sharps and flats and the next letter trick to figure it out.

Mnemonic suggestion: Remember that the order of sharps in the circle of 5th starts with F. That is all to remember. Then you can construct the order yourself. The next sharp is always the 5th degree of the scale A B C D E F G. Explanation: 1st sharp is F. Then counting 5 notes starting with F: F G A B C = 2nd sharp is C. Then start with C counting 5 notes: C D E F G = 3rd sharp is G. Then the next one starts with G and counting 5 notes or degrees: G A B C D = 4th note or sharp is D. Then starting with D we get similarly D E F G A = 5th note to be put as sharp is A. Then A B C D E = 6th note or sharp is E. And finally, the last one: Starting with E (the 6th sharp) we get: E F G A B = 7th sharp is B. That is how to construct the order of sharps easily in case you do not remember: FCGDAEB.

Hey Gracie. I really enjoyed every bit but the best was during your screaming baby. I love how you just stayed calm lol. As a father who makes phone calls for work I honestly get that all the time lol. My question is, how the 1 4 5 or I IV V chord are all majors, during a minor scale since the first chord is minor, what is the rules during a minor scale? For instance with 2 5 1 it’s not still majors during the 1 if the first chord we begin the scale with is c minor. I’d really appreciate that explanation because I’m trying to venture off of using the Cminor scale to play 2 5 1 vs c major 2 5 1

Gracie, I noticed that ALL letters listed in that order (FCGDAEB) each are MATCHED with their 5th Letter ) F. count 5 = C C. count 5 = G G. count 5 = D D. count 5 = C A. count 5 = E E. count 5 = B B. count 5 = F Sounds indeed like the Circle of 5th.!😅 I can relate music with math. They are all interwoven indeed. Also, I noticed that if you read each of them backwards, their distance is 4. So, 5 forward (right), 4 backwards (left).

This is great review for a songwriter and musician like me. To remember I just sing the sharps like I do my Abc's and then do the same. Basicly make up a song that I like and can remember. Or just pick a tune and change the words to the circle of 5ths and the order of sharps and flats. By the way, what key do you get when you drop a piano down a mine shaft...............A flat miner.😊❤✌

Hi Gracie, You have a gift to explain and huge knowledge, thank you for your time. Is there any shortcut to identifying any chords to which scale belongs taking into inconsideration the inversions? It might be a silly question to ask but I am a beginner and I don't yet master all the scales hence the chords and their inversions. If I take a new song and I can see the chords and it takes a bit of groundwork to figure them out, which is absolutely fine, I am not scared of putting the hours in. I was wondering if it is an easy way. Enjoy spring :)!
