Gracious at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival, as promised.
Background. This was the first time we played Super Nova in public - fine time to premier it - in front of 100,000's of people!!
The power from the generator kept fluctuating, making the Melletron out of tune.
Tim, Allen and I have synced what we could.
Hope you enjoy the good bits.
I will put the soundtrack of Once on a Windy Day up, as there is a blisteringly great guitar sole at the end, and the film we were sent finishes long before that. After Windy day we did CBS as an encore, but the guy that owns the movie, only sent us what you see here..

Thanks Ruben. We wrote and rehearsed Super Nova in 1970, and the first time we ever played it live was at the Isle of Wight!! Pretty mad thing to do! We recorded in the Autumn and Winter of the same year. The album was never released while we were together, but came out on Phillips budget label rather than Vertigo some time later

Robert lipson, I'm from the us and I have both of your albums from 71 and 72. Both are amazing pieces of music, I mean the mellotron and the interplay that goes on with guitar, vocals is really just absolutely incredible. It's just too bad that you guys didn't go further 😔. Well anyways thanks for the fantastic live footage.

I am a 16 year old from Florida and I’ve been on a prog binge for the past 2 years. I’ve just discovered Gracious the other day and I fell in love the second I heard “Introduction.” It’s easily one of my favorite songs now. I wish there were more prog bands coming out nowadays. So far all my generation really has is King Gizzard. Who knows? Maybe I might start making music with my friends at some point. Could be fun and I’ve always enjoyed singing and I picked up the bass a little over a year ago. I’d just hope we’d be able to bring back the spirit from the 70-90’s that seems to have been lost. Thanks for uploading this, man. Hope you’re doing well

As someone who's between your generation and the one that produced this music, age-wise (I'm 44), I encourage you to keep digging around on the internet. There are bands out there playing music that's kind of spiritually descended from stuff like this. For example, if you're up for something with major '70's prog and/ or psych vibes and very creative, but a bit heavier, I highly recommend checking out Slift (from France) and Elder (originally from my home turf in New England, but now based in Germany), if you're not familiar with them. Also, definitely consider making your own music in this vein like you said. We can always use more bands that have their own take on this kind of sound.

If you're digging the kinda spooky protometal type progressive rock from this era you need to check out Quatermass and Black Magic. Black Magic gets a bit of a nod for also touching on some elementary forms of goth and shoegaze and providing influence there.

@@SecretWeapon62578 Elder I guess was from Providence right? I was given a couple of tapes by someone from Armageddon a few years ago. I thought it was decent. Kinda brought me back to that Sea of Tombs, Dead Meadow, BRMC era of the early 2000's. I had a few friends who thought Sea of Tombs was absolutely groundbreaking.... until I introduced them to my massive collection built by buying old dudes record collections. The fucking albums I scored and discovered for what is now like quarters on the hundreds of dollars.
@SecretWeapon62578
@SecretWeapon62578 2 жыл бұрын
@@Cheeseburger.Launch.Sequence not sure which Elder releases you heard, but from your description, it sounds like it was probably from the earlier part of their career. Honestly, I thought their material was just decent until the "Lore" album from 2015. That was quite a leap forward for them in my opinion, and since then they've been producing really good stuff with increasingly prevalent '70's prog and even Krautrock influences mixed in with their existing style. Plus, they've added a second guitarist, which I think was becoming a necessity given the increasing intricacy of their arrangements. If you haven't heard their more recent stuff, you should give it a listen.

I MANESKIN!!!!!! Giudicate VOI !!!!!!! Io NON ho parole dico SOLO come la musica sia caduta così in BASSO!!!!!!! E NON SOLO con loro !!!!!!! Trap Rap etc !!!!!!

Of all the tracks to play live to a 600,000 strong audience, they choose Super Nova, which wasn't on their debut album (the only one available at the time) and is twenty minutes long ! Mad bastards ! But brilliant, all the same. Thankyou so much for posting this precious footage of a brilliant and criminally-overlooked prog rock group

You are exactly right! And the mellotron mucked up. We actually hadn’t played Super Nova in front of anyone -let alone an Isle of Wight Audience. And, in true rock tradition, we ended up getting there late, and went in last on Thursday night. It got a little better when we played Windy Day, which is also up on you tube. Thanks for commenting. Robert Lipson Gracious!

'Gracious' was one of several intriguing band names (Quatermass, Plastic Penny, Grease Band etc) emblazoned on the rear sleeve of the original USA/Australasian pressing of Jesus Christ Superstar, as of course singer Paul Davis played the part of Peter. This was the 'seed' planted in my mind which led to me searching high & low and eventually finding your two albums; I also found that stunning ' Quatermass' LP. Good question about Windy day. I think it was too long-when we finally released it as a single, all the jazz stuff was cut and the solo!! We double billed with King Crimson on their 4th gig and when they had successfully blown us off the stage (as they did with every band they played with-even The Rolling Stones in Hyde Park who waited 1 hour after their set before they went on stage!!) the next day we ordered a new one from Melotronics or whatever they were called in Birmingham. The big difference with ours was we had the 2 keyboards doing exactly the same instruments. That meant when the 8 seconds of strings on the tape loop get to the end, there was no mini gap as the other keyboard picked up the strings so no gap-hope it makes sense

Ahh, the super-ego of The Mick, probably only rivaled by the size of Elvis' generosity and sincere humility. The Stones did not have this luxury at the Tami Show when the brilliant James Brown destroyed them and they had to follow his set immediately. ha ha ha!
