How long did it last before the pump went bad?

Around 500 gallons. The replacement pump that I am installing in this video has about 400 gallons on it and it's still going strong.

I didn’t think these could be rebuilt or repaired. I bought an X7 and I had called graco about a question I had and the rep there told me that these style pumps just need to be replaced when they go bad. He said when mine goes out I’d need to buy a whole new rig or possibly purchase a whole new pump unit and I’d only be able to reuse my frame or cart with wheels. So I’m happy to see this vid. I’m gonna download it.

Correct. Looks like after another 500 or so gallons the pump i replaced in my graco x5 is going out again. I'm going to replace it again and see how long I can keep the unit going.

I got to digging and down the cylinder built into the wall i found the reason for paint eventually leaking. My piston was perfect and not scored at all. There is a black plastic seal on top of a rubber o ring. Once these start to degrade paint will leak beyond the piston and only get worse. I removed both with an oring pic and heated the pump carefully with a butane torch but it was a pain in the A. If i can find replacements that are an exact fit and they work i will let you guys know. It would save a ton of money if I make it work. I would post a pic but cant on youtube comments

Seth did you figure out a compatible replacement for the seal and o-ring? I'd love to get more detail on how you did your repair. The price of the replacement pump assembly is almost 2/3 the price of a complete new x5 sprayer, with warranty, which almost makes these things disposable.

Hey so I opened up mine and it looks nice and clean. There is even clean grease inside. I’m assuming it’s something simple. I noticed the spring is missing that goes with the ball bearing on the paint brake hose.

I'm going to see if Graco, or other supplier, makes a finer strainer mesh sock for this intake? I bet that would reduce the particle size entering into the pump piston?

I have the same sprayer with the same problem of leaking paint took it apart but I was just wondering if they is a gasket or seal where the piston is located I could buy instead of the whole pump?

When you put a new pump on these can you turn that big gear by hand easily, or does the new piston and pump create too much pressure to easily turn by hand. I have two of them that are clean as can be and don't look like they have had more than a few gallons run through them. But they won't prime and don't seem to create and vacuum or pressure at all. Both ball valves are clean as new. I have a couple expensive sprayers and I've been painting 40 years. I just can't believe these things are worn out. That pump is much cheaper made for sure.

think i have an older x5 model(front label looks different) . Is the outlet valve set up not the same? mine seems to not be removable to clean. My sprayer wont hold pressure. Ive cleaned the inlet valve but it still wont hold pressure.

I bought one of these, leaking, and gummed up with paint, here's what I did. I drilled a small hole from the bottom up to where the piston exits the hole. Remember how water pumps on cars have a hole there so it acts as an early warning sign for a failing seal? Same idea. There is a packing seal about two thirds in and you can feel resistance when installing the piston. I squirted gun oil in there and let it re-moisturize the packing. Also, I wired in a separate fuse holder so I can replace the fuse, and not the whole board. It's really a simple machine. I hope the hole let's paint run out and not gum up gears. I hope this helps someone out there.

I drilled a hole too n it helps to leak the paint out into a small bucket with a cloth filter...i re-use that paint....im trying to find a silicon sealer to patch the piston leak...

Steve Osmonson I'm not completely sure if the x7 has the same pump but if it's leaking paint from the bottom it's likely that the pump is going out. It will function for awhile but the paint gets into the gears and will eventually ruin those parts too. I would open it up and have a look

Hello good afternoon. I have a Graco Magnum Pro X9, it has a new gasket kit, when I turn it on in Prime position it works very well, the problem is when I want to turn it on after turning it off, either in the same position or to apply paint. I have 2 opinions, it can be the Pressure Switch (check that it does not have a short circuit) or change the complete motor (check it also) which is not good because it is expensive. Do you have any idea how I can check both options to detect or rule out the faults? It is important to mention that if the machine stays working and does not turn off, it works very well and does not smell of burning. Kind regards.

No it doesn't. From what I understand its a leather seal and you can't replace it.

I've done some more research and have not come up with a definitive answer yet. The series B and C have a "Prime" Button that the series A does not. I'm not sure if you can buy that part and simply add that feature to your Series A or if the chassis of the series A simply can't accommodate that feature all together.

It looks like it worked. I’m guessing the paint starts leaking through as the piston wears out the bore and over sizes the id. So I’m thinking eventually I will have to replace the sleeve. I rather replace a $3 sleeve than a $100 plus pump.

LUCY STYLES I did it with a mill. I bought the sleeve from grainger. It was honestly an easy route for me because I had access to a mill, but if I didn’t I think I would have just bought a new sprayer

I ran water through mine when switching paint colors from flat white to grey semi . within minutes the wife saw paint coming from housing bottom . I think I smoked the packing gasket . How much is the part . I can get it fixed for under 200.00 or fix myself since I have already pulled it apart to view the pump . Suggestions ?

What if its priming great but running and not holding pressure?

Its likely the outlet ball check valve. Its right where the hose comes out of the machine. What the hose attaches to is the check valve. It is pretty likely that there is an obstruction that is causing the ball not to seat well. Remove it and check. If this valve is not closing completely the hose will shake like its building pressure but never stops.

the ball seems to be clear I cleaned it out very clear carefully and it's nice and silver with no paint residue but the spring tension seems to be very very weak

Sir Miles Does the hose shake like it's trying to build pressure? If it does, that valve is probably the problem. It could also be the intake valve. I would say it's less likely but those two check valves are pretty crucial to it being able to build pressure.

How can you tell if your pump is going bad or if your machine had a clog? My X7 was working as it should, cleaned it the same as i always do. Went to use it the next day, its got full pressure for 1-2 seconds then loses almost all pressure. Let off the trigger for 1-2 seconds and it will bring pressure back but loses it again

The bearing on the shaft appears to be a radial bearing. I bought something similar on eBay for building a cnc machine. I believe the vendor was PGN.

Need to open it up and apply TSL on pump gasket periodically. This will increase its life significantly. These are designed to fail that's why it's not simple to access this area to apply TSL.

You did a fantastic job but the unit pump are so cheap it’s not even worth rebuilding it , just save your money get the higher end with external pump and you can pop in a new pump externally easily. With the money you keep spending on those toys you can get one of there real units.. I know they can be expensive, but they will last a long time..
