God bless romhackers. Making stuff like this while knowing full well that it'll never escape the pit of extreme obscurity takes an immense amount of passion and will.

Ok - now I got it: the music is from 2017. "Iris Missions" is a Romhack of the original Layla from 1986, which had another soundtrack.
@Ryan-ok2ks2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for pointing that out. Was really confused for a moment...Doesn't help that they have "original game 1986" in the image.. *Though looking up a lets play of the 1986 one shows the real soundtrack is pretty good.

Ah, okay...i was confused over this as well. The music sounds a bit more advanced than I'd expect from an 80s nes game

Life Hack is an S tier ring tone. When I first heard this, I was like there is no way that NES could do this. It was sad but also sensible that it wasn't NES Era, but still shows the power of bit music.

Threw me. At some point I thought, "surely thats reverb!" but then it didnt last long, and there was ample regular delay in the style of old NES, so I thought, "Im just not listening hard enough, NES didnt have reverb". This is great stuff, love all the modulations.

Rarely does 2A03 sound so mindblowing. The length the chip is pushed to here showcases how far our knowledge of it has come.
@PrekiFromPoland4 жыл бұрын
It's not the height of 2A03's capabilities, but it's still great considering these songs were composed on dB-SOFT's poor sound driver. "Sound driver" is the part of game's code that's responsible for how music and in-game effects sound (and these themselves are stored within the game's code - the PRG ROM), this is what makes Konami, Capcom or Nintendo games have their distinct, recognizable vibe, despite running on the same hardware (I don't count expansion chips here). And if you played some of those bootleg NES/Famicom games, you might have noticed that their sound is quite off due to possible accidental alternations of the sound driver by pirates. So it's not just the hardware that SupperTails66 pushed to its limits, but mainly the software, a barely documented one at that. What's more amazing is that he wrote all the songs in ImpulseTracker and then made his own application called Clapton to inject the music modules as the sound data within game's ROM. And his own level editor specifically for the purpose of this hack.
@blara24014 жыл бұрын

Is this a sequel to the game Layla? I came here just looking for the awesome into music for Layla and found this :) Layla was one of those rare games that I found out about and liked long after the era it was released, which is very rare since most of our favorites from back then have the advantage of having nostalgia raise their score in our minds. Hack's author had this same limited sound engine to work with, so technically they could pull it off in 1986. They just... didn't, not everyone is a skilled musician, besides that the original game was made by a little-known company with possibly limited budget.

This soundtrack is absolutely amazing at a compositional level (and at a more technical level too, in how it takes this driver's capabilites to the max). I'd only wish the higher frequencies weren't so grating. Was it actually that hard to just turn the volume down in this sound driver?
