Hi Ms, could you please explain why SLIGHTLY PERFECT is acceptable, I think SLIGHTLY will go with GRADABLE ADJECTIVES, but PERFECT is ABSOLUTE ADJECTIVE ??? I am a bit confused 😢
@howtoEnglish1 Жыл бұрын
Hello, can you give me an example? Where does it say that it's acceptable? You are right - perfect is an absolute adjective.
@trangthu2813 Жыл бұрын
@@howtoEnglish1 Thank Ms, I saw it by chance on the Internet when I wanted to read more about this topic, I can't find any longer 😭, so 'SLIGHTLY PERFECT' is wrong, isn't it?
@howtoEnglish1 Жыл бұрын
@@trangthu2813 maybe somebody (a writer?) was just playing with those words and used this phrase on purpose because it sounds so odd :) Slightly perfect is incorrect.

@@howtoEnglish1 Hi Ms, Plz help to choose the correct option , I am a bit confused 😢 e.g. Peter is QUITE/EXTREMELY different from his brother; they don't have anything in common? I have 2 questions, Could you help me to clarify? Q1. Is DIFFERENT a "GRADABLE" or a 'NON GRADABLE' adjective? Q2: 'QUITE' has two opposite meanings 'Completely' and 'Not Very'. Can we say QUITE DIFFERENT (=completely different) ?
@anielloortega5082 Жыл бұрын
Hello!! what about QUITE. it has two opposite meanings.. It's still confusing.

doesn't exhausted mean tired, can't we say I'm very exhausted?
@MuhammadwasifWasif-ve2pn4 ай бұрын
No .bcz exhausted is non gradable that 'why we can't use very before exhausted but we can use absolutely before exhausted.
@janaabdulnaser666122 күн бұрын
No because exhausted = very tired

But there are millions of examples as ( more delicious than) ! Are they all wrong?
@howtoEnglish13 ай бұрын
No, they're not wrong. "more delicious than" is used to compare 2 things that are delicious - but one is better (more delicious) than the other.
@hadidafyan84593 ай бұрын
@@howtoEnglish1 exactly my point! So “delicious “ is gradable after all!
@howtoEnglish13 ай бұрын
@@hadidafyan8459 Hmm, delicious (meaning "very tasty") is a non-gradable, extreme adjective - if you don't believe me, have a look here learnenglish.britishcouncil.org/grammar/b1-b2-grammar/adjectives-gradable-non-gradable Normally, we don't use non-gradable adjectives with comparative or superlative forms - but - as you've pointed out - the phrase "more delicious than" does exist. It is used to compare 2 things. "More delicious than" is commonly used in spoken English. Some native speakers of English say it's ok to use it, some prefer "tastier than". But just because "delicious" is used in this phrase, it doesn't make the word gradable.
@hadidafyan84593 ай бұрын
@@howtoEnglish1 Of course I believe you! You are an excellent native speaker teacher and that’s why I’m seeking your advice! And thank you so much for the invaluable explanation! So to summarise can we just say : delicious is essentially a non-gradable adjective and phrases like ( more delicious than) are basically incorrect as far as traditional grammar rules are concerned, but native speakers still use it informally? Thank you very much
@steveevans999123 күн бұрын
@@hadidafyan8459 "more delicious than" is a comparative, we are comparing it to something else, this is not the same as gradable/non-gradable adjectives.
