The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare is a drama set in 16th-century Venice, revolving around themes of justice, mercy, and the complexities of human relationships. The story follows a Venetian merchant, Antonio, who secures a loan from the Jewish moneylender Shylock to help his friend Bassanio. Bassanio seeks funds to court the wealthy Portia, whom he wishes to marry. Antonio, confident in his ships’ return, agrees to Shylock’s harsh bond: if Antonio cannot repay the debt on time, Shylock is entitled to a pound of his flesh. Unfortunately, Antonio’s ships are lost at sea, and Shylock demands his bond be fulfilled, motivated by his resentment toward Antonio for past mistreatment. The trial that follows pits Shylock’s demand for justice against Portia’s plea for mercy, disguised as a lawyer. In a twist, Portia cleverly argues that Shylock may take the flesh but without spilling blood, a condition he cannot fulfill. Shylock loses the case, and the court punishes him, stripping him of his wealth and demanding he convert to Christianity.
