I love that you are so real. I really love that you are you. I like that people, dogs, and even camera-tech edits are included in the filming of your videos. It shows that you are from the real world and not just staged to get paid. Teachers are humans, and I was so surprised this year how many students think that teachers can give feedback and grade as fast as a computer. I had to remind my students many times that I am not a computer when they were so upset they didn't have their papers back the next day. I understood their dismay when it took me a month to grade their essays. I finally realized I was putting off grading because I was very intimidated to even take on a stack of essays. It was not so much the size of the stack, but I thought I would not be as good as a computer. How dare we allow ourselves as teacher to think that we are not as worthy or valuable as a computer. A computer is programmed to read their work no matter if it is persuasive, captivating or dull. A human will click off a site in one second if it is not interesting or useful; a computer will continue on. I have much more confidence now to take on the big, and more important, job of grading The Essay. (Caps intended for the ominous presence of the all-powerful-essay.) Thanks so much for your help.

Great ideas. Just got my first long term sub assignment for a middle school English class and the biggest obstacle I'll have is grading. I'm also doing a Masters and credentialing program on top of this so I'll need all the hacks I can get! Thank you so much!

Thank you, Laura!! I love your advice! I just discovered you about a week ago and subscribed immediately. You inspired me to change my classroom set-up to the catwalk. I am loving it! I can't wait to watch more of your videos! Thank you for sharing your insights.

These are great. I don't know how you manage 5 classes though, last year I was overwhelmed with 3 (86 Grade 11s). This year should be easier as I'm down to 55 and have my lunch and prep together so I've got two uninterrupted hours every day to plan, prep and grade (unless I get a half period on call, we have to do 32 a year, unpaid) Thanks for the pep talk and motivation.

Thank you so much for this video! I have a question about SSR: what do you do when a student does not bring his or her SSR book to class on Friday? (Besides giving them a zero for that day.) Do you have an alternative assignment for them?
@laurarandazzo1158
@laurarandazzo1158 7 жыл бұрын
Hey, Alissa, great question! In addition to losing those easy reading points, that student also becomes my employee for the hour, alphabetizing yearbook receipts, filing papers in writing portfolios, etc. If I don't have enough work to keep her busy, she'll write a practice SAT essay for me. Sometimes kids forget their books. It happens. But if it happens more than once, I also make a quick phone call home to a parent/guardian to help the student remember in the future. That usually takes care of it. For esp. forgetful kids or ones with IEPs, I sometimes let them leave their SSR books on one of my cabinets behind my desk so it's always ready for them on Fridays.

I thought the same thing when I saw that. And I had even asked the Union Rep about that last year and he said that it counts as "additional duties as needed" and they won't pay for it, even though if they had a sub they'd have to pay the sub. :-(
