Yeah, it's a close one. I can't deny that I got lucky quite a bit on this. Still, some spots were really tough, and I managed not to choke on those spinning balls to get stuck again.
I am really disappointed with how it ended though, I'm sure I could have made some headway into loop 2, but I had no idea that there was a second big core attached on the first boss, and it got me coming out of the warp. Cheapass game -.-;.

Konami did a spectacular job with this title by keeping the integrity of the original gameplay since the 1985 version. Tight spaces, interesting core bosses. Everything. And gotta love Konami's use of the 360 degree objects since Super C on Super Nintendo in the 90's. Applause to the company for still existing while others fell off within the last 30 years of game development.

+ken woodson Agreed sir! That is why I've always loved the Gradius Series... if it ain't broke don't fix it. I would of loved to of played this one. Never got the chance. So thanks to Seahawk for the play through. Great game!!!

No Moai stage? That's surprising considering the significant number of reused bosses [Gradius: never letting a good ship design go to waste since 1988]. I see the tradition of the pushover final boss is still in effect...

That was because Konami wanted to free this game from old Gradius tropes like the Moai level and the volcano level to take it in a new direction, supposedly. They did add new content like the acid stage, an additional boss rush and Shadow Dancer early in the game, and a stage 2 that was the other side of the last stage, so that's reasonable.

I know Edge Magazine only give 10/10 for a 'revolutionary' game - but I still insist Gradius V deserved a 10 status. Shoot em up perfection. Every time I play Gradius V i get the same rush.

Don't bother checking prices for gradius 4 and 5, 5 is $24-$60, 3+4(the only way I've seen it sold) Is a flat $115. Kind of outrageous.

every time that i'd clear this game i'd always feel that the last time warp after the final boss is, somehow, a plot hole...

I love the time use in this game where it actually saves your first playthough data and replays when you visit that area later in the game. Only problem is, if you go back in time to destroy the final boss it wouldn't be in the future to force you to go back to the past, because you've already destroyed it. You helped yourself to destroy this thing once so it wouldn't exist later in the game.

That's not how it works. When he opened the rift and time traveled that area at the end of the game didn't simply disappear. Instead like the Vic Viper there was temporarily two of them.

Well, I'm seeing better prices now (oddly enough), but I searched on eBay after seeing aliultimate009's playthrough a few weeks ago and copies of the US version were selling for over $75. I've seen the Japanese version for as much as $175.

I would say that's why it's a throwaway story. Story's not there to impress you, it's there to establish a setting, and all.

+FlawedRed Nope. Not pointless. For the few like me, I do enjoy what they give me. R-Type for one has a dark story...yet I enjoy learning about it. I try to get as much shmups that I see and like as possible. They're rare. There are a few I have to import.

+AZD ALL (ArType) I hear you. The way the narrative is used in games may require a different type of reading/interpreting, but it's still there. Some games emphasize it more than others, but just because it might not be the focal point of a game doesn't mean it isn't necessary.
