Love these little guys. I had one as a pet for a while, it LOVED bananas and raisins, apples every so often, cheerios, oats, veggies and fruits and nuts mostly. Slept with our cat. We have some who live under our shed and when I go out and want them to come I make kissy noises ..they come looking for handouts, which they know I have. Wonderful gentle creatures once they learn to trust you and don't run away. :) Whistle pigs my dad always called them cause they whistle to alert others.

One lives behind the theatre I work at. I feed him all the time. He's halarious. comes out and waits for me. I could easily see having one for a pet. Nice friendly critters

Not so fast there Julia, its mid June here in Mi. I had a Mother (guess) and two pups settle on my property last summer. I enjoyed watching and feeding them all summer. I too was really disappointed when mid fall one pup and big momma disappeared. One pup stayed over winter. That pup was killed by a car just recently in May. Not one week ago first week in June (2022) Big Momma returned with 2 new pups. Oh but wait I found out she had 3 pups. So now I know she had a separate home site to deliver her pups late winter or very early spring. They are goofy and fun to watch. Hope they hang around all summer and hope they don't eat my freshly planted garden too.

I saw one in my yard at the beginning of the summer. After that I started to leave food out, nuts and fruit. He came every day, all summer and gave my grown children and I such a treat. We truly enjoyed watching him. He hasn't come around for the last week and my heart is broken. I think something must have happened to him and I feel so sorry. I like to think that the little guy went into early hibernation but it seems too early. He was so small, this was probably his first year.

I'm sorry you lost your house and groundhog. I hope the next homeowner treated him well. If you still like groundhogs, you might enjoy the groundhogs of Chunk the Groundhog. Those guys live in a groundhog paradise, as far as I can see. They don't get patted, however, so you and your buddy did better in that respect.

Although this was 8 years ago, I’m so sorry you’ve lost your house. Although taming a wild animal is beautiful and rewarding for us, almost a magical feeling, if he comes to trusts other humans, like he trusted you, these people may consider him a pest, a plague or dangerous, and they will kill him. Please, please, if you do this again, be sure you go into his habitat and not the other way around. For their own well-being and that of his offsprings.

Oh, wow. He let you pat him when he was busy eating! That's also the best time to pat my hamster. Were those sunflower seeds you were feeding him? I've been a groundhog fan since I was little, many decades ago. Thank you for sharing him with us.

they still don't seem to particularly like it, they just are too busy eating. same thing with most cats. humans bribing their way into friendships and then tricking themselves into thinking it's mutual

They are cute, but farmers hate them....they collapse foundations of barns, sheds, even houses. They dont mean to, it's just in their nature to dig tunnels. Way in the fields, yes, but not around structures. You make friends with them, they'll move under your house... and collapse it!.....

Nice job. Its a shame more people don't take the little bit of time to watch these videos and learn that groundhogs aren't mean or dangerous in any way. Its amazing how many people think that groundhogs will hurt them somehow, because they seem to assume that they are vicious for some reason. Nevermind the fact that groundhogs never behave aggressively towards people...

Gerff They don't eat wood. They dig narrow tunnels several feet underground. It's pretty rare that they cause any type of structural weakening due to their tunnels. Plus, it's likely that his den isn't actually under the deck. He probably just uses the deck as cover when he travels across the yard to and from his den, which is probably somewhere else. We have a small network of groundhog tunnels at my mother's home, and yet the exits and entrances are all away from the 2 sheds that are right there. They go under the sheds, but their dens aren't under there.
