Koalas are threatened
While hundreds of thousands of koalas were shot for the fur trade in the 1920s, fortunately the animals are no longer hunted today. One of the biggest threats today is the destruction of their habitat. Entire forests are being cut down to make way for agriculture, infrastructure and urban development - especially in metropolitan areas in Queensland and New South Wales.
Added to this is the climate crisis: many koalas die in persistent droughts. Increasingly extreme bushfires are raging more and more often, destroying the last bit of bushland left. The devastating bushfires in the summer of 2019/2020 affected almost three billion vertebrates, including more than 60,000 koalas, who died, were injured or displaced from their habitats.
