Harvest the scionwood during the later part of the dormant season while the buds are still tight. Store in the fridge wrapped in a moist towel inside of a partially open plastic bag. Grafting can begin before the tree is ready to push its buds and continue after the leaves have pushed late into the spring. Here in Northern California I start grafting in mid February and go until about late April.

I live in Northern, Ca as well :) This video was just what I needed to learn to graft my apple tree. What month do you put your scion wood in the fridge? January and then start grafting in February? I don't want to have my wood start getting mold in the fridge so I am hoping one month will be okay.

Wow, very good video. I appreciate that you showed all the different types in one video, and with good camera angle to see it all. Grafting is so simple in theory (and in action it appears) but I'm still nervous that I won't do it right. I just pruned a few various fruit trees in my own yard and grafted some of the pruned wood back on lower to help shape the tree with a better crotch. If it doesn't work it's no big deal. I guess what I did were all side grafts, but I cut off the bark flap. I can see now I should not have done that. So it's a combination of a side and a whip graft I guess. Is there a particular time that's best to graft? Like, right at bud swell? I worry I may have done it a bit soon, but I think we'll start seeing bud swell in the next month or so down here in Houston. The cambium layer was green and moist.

A year ago, grafting was "the dark arts", but I had a KZbin binge, gave it a go and everything took, although I had one graft ripped of by some idiot blundering through my property and another that was displaced but re-healed. This year, I have some confidence and have done a dozen or so grafts of varieties that are impossible to obtain locally but can be mail ordered as scions.

Hi Feng Yun, Please look online for "North American Scion Exchange". You can trade scions by mail. If you have nothing to trade yourself, you can offer to pay postage/bubblewrap envelope & offer a small payment to someone who has the variety (s) you want to try grafting. It's an online community & the people are often helpful.

Have you tried Tree Kote or Tree Wound instead of having the hassle of melting the wax? Great job summarizing several methods at once.
@hunterreed1010 Жыл бұрын
Much better to use a beeswax-based product if you use any at all. Some of the others like Tanglefoot's Tree Wound are made with sweetened petroleum gasses, ethyl-benzene, dimethyl-benzene, and black acetylene (I doubt you'd want it on your wound.) IV Organics is a fantastic product but costs $40 a can (however, I think you dilute it to at least half, so, worth it?) I'm a professional fruit tree specialist and pruner, for what it's worth.
@musicbymark Жыл бұрын
@@hunterreed1010 Are you sure the petroleum and other chemicals in tanglefoot prove problematic? Is there evidence that any significant amount ends up in the fruit, or that it damages the tree? We put petroleum jelly on babies and on our lips of course, and all the plastics in our lives are petroleum based, albeit not dissolved. I've also noticed some grafters claimants of utmost importance to paint any dark black wound sealer white, to avoid overheating. However, I don't recall noticing many grafts failing once they take so I'm not sure overheating is an issue where I live in the upper peninsula of Michigan.

+smorgole I couldn't find a grafting knife that I liked so I made my own. First I used my favorite kitchen knife which is a high quality wood handle Swiss or German made knife. Then I cut the blade shorter to about 4 inches long and then ground one side flat and the other cutting side I ground to a slight angle(maybe 15 degrees). Finally, I spend an hour with a good sharpening stone and worked both sides of the knife to get a super sharp custom made grafting knife!

@AgrarianDreams6 жыл бұрын
I think the best time to graft is at the end of winter before the buds begin to swell. If the weather turns too cold after grafting the grafts will be in danger. Below 20 degrees might start to be too cold. If the scionwood was harvested with the buds tight and still dormant, then the scions can be stored in the refrigerator in moist paper towels in a partly open plastic bag for a few weeks to over a month and then be used.(keep the paper towels moist by checking them every few days and re-wetting them)
