I have a further question which unfortunately is long winded. I have just procured and planted in Gujarat, India, 10 acres of Dragon fruit cuttings. There is a great demand for dragon fruit cutting at the moment in India as everyone wants to do this with the result that the person who gave me the cuttings now says that he can't supply me for the next year even though based on his assurance I had all the infrastructure in place, costing a tidy package for another 10 acres. My supplier has said that he only takes his cuttings from mature plants that are 5 years old, as these in time will give better fruiting then cuttings taken from immature plants that are less than a year old. It would save me a lot of money to wait and get my own cuttings, but don't want to do this at the cost of having plants giving less yield over a spread of many year. Wishing you every success. Hi Richard, great work. Is the chicken fertilizer that your upplying fresh, or is it old matured, that has been moistened over the winter season.And can we use fresh chicken fertilizer straight from the chicken barn,on our dragon fruit trees. Thank and god bless.
@GraftingDragonFruit5 жыл бұрын
Hi James, the chicken fertilizer that I use has already been compost. So its been matured and moisten when I use it. I get it at Home Depot its about $4 for a bag. It's not safe to use fresh chicken fertilizer straight from the chicken barn. The fresh fertilizer is too strong for the Dragon Fruits and can cause them to stress if being used. Make sure to use chicken fertilizer that has already been compost and matured. It takes about 3 weeks for benefits to take effect but once it does it really shows on your plant.

Thank you jerwin Prejillana, you can help them be healthy by fertilizing regularly during the growing season. Chicken manure is great for Dragon fruit and they love it. Apply 1 inch of chicken manure to the base of your soil every 6 months and you'll have results similar like mine.

@GraftingDragonFruit5 жыл бұрын
Hi Windy, have you tried using fertilizer yet to help boost your dragon fruit plant to be strong enough to produce buds and hold them onto the branch? When dragon fruits are lacking nutrients they sometimes won't be strong enough to hold onto buds and will abort themselves to help them go back into the 'growing' stage instead of blooming stage. Chicken manure is a very good fertilizer that dragon fruits love. It will help them if you haven't already started. Or if you really want to step your game up. Organic Compost Tea will show you results right away. You can find that video in my channel.

Hi Paulpro PP, barbed wired cactus are called Pitaya and Dragon Fruits are called Pitahaya. So you are definitely right about them being related. I don't grow any of the barbed wired cactus so my experience with them is not much. They tend to be self pollinating because I see my neighbors that have them in the front yard always have flowers and fruits would set. The pollen will work but only time will tell. Thank you for sharing this. How often do you water the plants and how much water?
@GraftingDragonFruit5 жыл бұрын
Hi Sabina Fu, you're very welcome! I'm glad you found this video helpful. My water really depends on how hot the weather will be. I'm from California and in spring time its around 70F-80F. When its in that weather conditions I only need to water twice a week. I'd water around Saturday or Sunday one of those days when I'm free and water again around Wednesday or Thursday. Just check your soil to see if it is still moist. If it feels dry on top about 1 inch deep, then go ahead and water. I grow most of my dragon fruits in pots so I just water until I see a little bit of water running down from the bottom then I know that is more than enough. Just make sure you have good draining soil so if you do ever over water. Its all drained out so you don't have to worry about any root or stem rot. Hope this helps!

What varieties of dragon fruit do you have and for what reason did you choose that variety. Was it size of fruit, self pollinating, unusual variety, easy to grow, color of flesh, sweetness of fruit??? I just received about 10 cuttings from a friend, and I am not too familiar with dragon. Could you suggest some websites you use to get information on Pitayas. I would like to tell you I have watched every video you have posted and I have learned much about dragon fruit.
@GraftingDragonFruit5 жыл бұрын
Hi chava Chiva, Here's a video of me talking about all the varieties that I have kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJCZeoWplJuti68 I chose all these varieties based on the taste. I didn't care much if it was self pollinating or easy to grow. Once I took a bite of the dragon fruit and knew what it taste like. I knew I had to HAVE that variety and would do whatever it takes to get them to grow in my own garden. Thanks for watching my videos and I'm glad it was educational for you! You have beautiful dragon fruit plants in your yard. How long does it take to grow that big? What kind of soil did you use to mix with chicken manure? How often did you water them during summer months? Thank you for showing your dragon plants.
@GraftingDragonFruit5 жыл бұрын
Hi Heather Pham, thank you for your kind words! This dragon fruit plant is 5 years old and thats the amount of time it took to get this big. It would have been bigger if I didn't do heavy pruning on it every end of the season. I mixed fox farm ocean forest soil with chicken manure. I water my plants 3 times a week in the summer months. I go out every day to check the soil if its moist on the top if it isn't ill lightly wet it to keep it consistently damp. This prevents the branches from getting skinny and wrinkling. :)

I will make a video and show you my branches that bears fruit, and that same exact branch will bud again the next season. I will take that branch off once its been depleted of all its nodes(spikes) or if its being covered and pushed down by other branches and being blocked of direct sunlight.
