Royal Television Society nominated film. Two years in the making, this new Goldmark film finds 93 year old veteran of abstraction Graham Boyd at work in his Hertfordshire studio. He talks about his life and inspiration; the early development of his painting into pure abstraction, the impact on his work of his time spent in Africa and America and his continuing artistic journey. goldmarkart.com
‘Standing in front of his paintings we might feel just such variegations of mood and feeling. They are so alive, so unpredictable, so disconcerting, and, yes, so beautiful if we make them so.’ Mel Gooding
‘I am just curious about what is going to happen … what I can do with colour… I don’t want to do what I have done before … the main thing is to do what surprises me.’ Graham Boyd
Goldmark has presented and sold the work of many classic abstract artists (from Kandinky to Miro to Caro to Hoyland) and of artists whose work deliberately incorporates alongside some kind of figuration the visual findings of abstraction (from Picasso to Matisse to Piper and Richards). It is of course the case that there are many ways in which geometric design, or artificial colour (heightened, say, or darkened, or exaggerated), or expressive brushwork and impasto, or chiaroscuro etc. − all by definition ‘abstract’ devices − are aspects of all kinds of figurative art throughout history. All art is in some sense an abstraction from observed actuality. This exhibition nonetheless, constitutes a significant moment for the gallery: for Graham Boyd is an artist utterly committed to pure abstraction, the first such artist to be ‘represented’ by Goldmark.
Graham Boyd spent two years in what was then Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) in the early 1950s and the dramatic scale of the African landscape had a profound impact on his perception of space and its representation. In the 1960s and 70s he discovered acrylic and Boyd now works exclusively in that medium. These experiences and discoveries powered his decisive move away from his studies in illustration and early incarnations as a figurative and landscape painter, towards the use of form and colour as expressive means in their own right.
In 1976 he was appointed as Head of Painting at the Hertfordshire College of Art and Design, St. Albans. As a principal Lecturer, he led the team responsible for developing a unique part-time B. A. Hons. Fine Art Degree Course specially designed to meet the needs of mature students.
For the past four decades Graham Boyd has worked from his Chipperfield studio in Hertfordshire. Despite his status and global acclaim, Boyd constantly seeks to move on as an artist and attends artists' workshops and symposiums around the world, where he has worked with an international cross-section of painters, sculptors and other media artists, including the late Sir Anthony Caro and the American abstract painter Larry Poons.

When I first heard him speaking, I thought it was a voiceover of his own words! He has the voice of a young man, at age 93! That’s crazy! Not only that, listening to this doco, I kept thinking that there are no cobwebs around this articulate man - everything he does is new! He’s so modern! Yet he’s part of history, he’s been painting for so long! His thoughts and his paintings aren’t stuck in any age, but are perpetually moving. He’s fascinating! Thankyou for this documentary on him. I’m from Australia, and haven’t heard of him til now, so this has been an amazing introduction to him. May Graham paint for another 93 years.

I was travelling around with Graham in his car when as a student at Hertfordshire College of Art and Design, staying at Avebury and looking at all those ancient sites. He was marvellous. I had met Henry Moore, done 8 x 4 foot oil paintings even tho only a Foundation student. But one day he was drawing a standing stone, and pointed out a streak of bird poo on it, how it gave an "accent". It was a revelation to me, changed how I see the world, opened up a world of experience and vision. It was also a time of rainbows. There is a great teacher, as well as a considerable artist. Many thanks! Nigel.

Beautiful documentary of a very inspiring and learned artist. I enjoyed this very much and look forward to more from Goldmark Gallery. However, I have some questions for the producers. Did the background music and stock video really add to what he was saying? I'd rather have just listened to him without trying to block out the other visual and sonic distractions. And sorry for being really pedantic, but if he mentioned listening to Beethoven quartets, why would you choose to play a solo piano piece (the "Moonlight" Sonata) and not an actual quartet? Because it was the first thing that came up on Google?
@lobstermash
@lobstermash 5 күн бұрын
Agreed. The Moonlight Sonata always reminds me of Lucia (Emmeline Lucas) and I can no longer take the slow movement seriously. It is stock audio.

@@jenniferclarke5579 that's when we are born. Artist are born with above average manual dexterity, if you don't have it you don't have the aptitude to become an artist. This is also true for playing guitar. I can do both shred like ingvai Malmsteen, and paint properly because of manual dexterity . For exhample there are some virtuos violin players. Then there are people who practice all their lives but will never be any good. When it comes to paintings, the people are easily fooled by below average painters like Van Gogh, picasso, ect because the people know nothing about painting.

It’s not easy to be simple ,lots of repetition of colour and shape is boring for the eye .
