I saw GCS in Columbus, Ohio when they were opening for Herbie Hancock when his Headhunters album was released. GCS was mind blowing!

The incredible lady on backing vocals is Patryce Horne. Hidden gem and she can still blow. Just shows you how trash the industry was and still is. She should have long since gotten her due; she's up there with the Patti's and the Aretha's.

I wasn't old enough when Larry Graham toured with Sly and The Family Stone so Graham Central Station was my first show in 77. Blue Magic,The Brothers Johnson then GCS hit the stage. Good times,greater memories and the baddiest music ever!!! We had great music all across the radio dial.I can hear someone thinking,"What's a radio dial?"

So happy to see them performing live in 1974 - pretty rare stuff - thanks! I was just 13 when I heard LG for the first time and I was hooked immidiately ... had to buy the 1974 Vinyl LP called "Graham Central Station" to which I am still listening today ... I love LG and his band ... especially Patryce "Choc-Let" Banks

I'm speechless. Graham Central Station started kicking ass in 1974, my senior year in High School. I knew of Larry Graham from his days performing with his cousin Sly Stone, and once he started his own group, I knew it was going to be something truly special. IT DAMN SURE WAS! This video-clip is Exhibit A of which I speak. I've never seen this performance before......it's one of those moments that make KZbin a pretty special website.

When Larry departed from SLY + The FAMILY STONE he took much of the energy that made the band the best live show in popular music history. (James Brown and the Grateful Dead were no where near as popular within the mainstream music buying culture as SLY + The FAMILY STONE). This video examples the energy that made famous SLY + The FAMILY STONE. Larry, alas, doesn't equal SLY as a singer so the song doesn't soar live as say SING A SIMPLE SONG or I WANT TO TAKE YOU HIGHER but the music is equal and superior in patches. Larry gets credit for work with SLY, his solo work here and his work with PRINCE. PFunk is SLY's son and Larry is the uncle. Check the crowd response here. I attended SLY + The FAMILY STONE shows w Larry in and out the line up. The post Larry shows lacked the out there with God intensity demonstrated in this video. Larry is just a better showman than his replacement Rusty or Rustee Allen and SLY FUCKED UP allowing Larry out of his band.

Ethan Hill Gotta dis agree with a few things here!! First P Funk was it's own conception except their earlier years when they wanted to do doo wop and Temptations style music! If anything Sly was an offspring to Jimi Hendrix style music! As for James Brown, he may not have been an icon in white culture music, but he sure was in Black culture music

Ethan Hill Additionally one of The Queens Of Funk is none other than Betty Davis! Her band consisted of Larry Graham Hershall Kennedy Cordell(guitar) and The Pointer Sisters as background singers!!

Nobody outfunked James Brown!!! Bootsy often says he took JB funk to George Clinton !! Parliament/Funkadelic was funky but so were many 1970s bands. The Meters, Kool and The Gang,Mandrill, The Ohio Players,Curtis Mayfield, ConFunkShun,L.T.D ,The Commodores,Earth,Wind and Fire,Slave,Graham Central Station, The Nite Liters,Charles Wright and the 103rd St.Band, Johnnie Guitar Watson, Bootsy's Rubber Band,Rick James,Prince,The Brothers Johnson. But love and respect has to go to The James Brown bands of the late 1960s and 1970s And Sly and The Family Stone..
@Superfoot
@Superfoot 6 жыл бұрын
Ethan you are correct, SLY and THE FAMILY STONE were the group in the late 60's and up till Graham left. They were the first intergrated group that ruled the charts.When Thank You Fa Lettin Be Mice Self came out 1969..that song change the whole industry. The song was like some 50 years from the future. The Beatles,Jimi Hendrix and The Who set the tone with their innovative making songs sound futuristic. James Brown and his 15 year old bass player William Collins set another level of funk with Lickin Stick. All groups during that era had their own sounds. It's absolutely impossible to say which was the best because people bought all their albums at the same time. I mean you could listen to the radio and the DJ wouldn't have to tell you who the artist was because people already knew because of their unique sound.
