Honestly it wouldn't supprise me if it was just a coincidence. Imagine living back then and not knowing any of the things we do today with science. The human mind loves pattern recognition and orions belt and other constellations were used for so many other aspects of culture and people didnt know they were other stars like our sun. I also really don't think the most people can comprehend what its like actually looking up into the sky with no light pollution and seeing the milky way and all the nebulas/gases and other amazing things in the sky. It represents basically a great unknown in the same way that death is a great unknown so I don't think its out of the realm of possibility that people would link the two.
