Younger generations would have no idea what it's like to watch a news program that's not putting people into hate groups and simply there to entertain and inform.

I used to love staying up late to watch Graham Kennedy. Here is a man who had a natural talent for TV. He had an edge in delivery that was way ahead of his time. Graham was fast witted and totally understood the verbal and visual jokes. There has never been anyone like him. As time goes on and new generations see him I hope they understand how important he is to Australian TV.

yeah, same here. I will forever remember mum bursting out in laughter & dads smile, while i was curled up in a blanket on the floor with the cat. Days which Aussie comedy was made on the fly. Brilliant

How can there be 9 thumbs down? The man was a genius on TV. His roles in the movies "Don's Party", "The Odd Angry Shot" and "The Club" tend to be understated....

Reality TV happened. Producers don't pay for real talent any more. I truly think graham was a one of a kind. Those of us that got to see him should be happy and thankful that we did. I don't believe that we will ever see another one like him. Maybe a copy, but not him.

Why is it that people's nostalgia is expressed by trite comparison to today? It's so lazy. Yes, there are elements of society and culture in the early 21st Century that aren't as good as bygone days. But yesterday had its fair share of shit too. Moreover, the absolutist view is just as trite, boring and lazy-minded. Just because audiences lap up cheaply made reality and elimination shows doesn't mean that there is no quality programming. You just have to go looking for it. If you can't be bothered, that's fine. Claiming that talent no longer exists because it's not ladled into your brain with no effort required on your part is the cultural equivalent of lacking object permanence.
@NxDoyle4 жыл бұрын
That's not entirely true, but I understand how modern life conditions people to speak in absolutes. Graham was a one of a kind. Australia has produced a few smart, funny, charismatic TV personalities since Graham, but I'm sure that they would agree: Graham was unique. Now, it's the 'producers not paying for real talent anymore' claim I take some issue with. First of all, as you said yourself, so-called reality TV has all but destroyed other genres. But when drama _is_ made, some cream rises to the top.

My memories of this time were of a little ratings stoush between Clive Robertson on Seven and Graham at Nine. If I remember correctly, Clive had carved out a nice little spot for himself at 10.30, his news broadcast peppered with dry, wry observations. When Nine countered by booking Graham, I resisted out of some silly loyalty to Clive. It didn't last. Graham Kennedy was the King, his ease in front of the camera was matchless in Australian television history.
@EamonThePhilogynistWalford2 жыл бұрын
Ironically, when Graham Kennedy moved to prime time with Australia's Funniest Home Videos in 1990, Clive Robertson would end up joining Nine, inheriting Graham's former timeslot with Robbo's World Tonight. ;-)

People who watched the show may remember that the audience would laugh hysterically after each commercial break. I was lucky enough to be in the studio audience on two separate occasions and Graham would tell dirty jokes during the ad breaks. As the floor manager counted down 3,2... he would deliver the punchline... I still remember one of them: Who was the last 20 stone black man to ride a derby winner? Lester Piggott"s cell mate!

A Melbourne teenage boy whole learnt his craft at 3UZ (Melb) under Cliff Nicholls as a TT Operator & returned Cliff's hilarious fire! Graham or Gra Gra started Bigtime on IMT, 'In Melbourne Tonight'. For a couple of years, this was only a Melbourne 'thing'. Then in LATER YEARS they overnight trucked tapes up to Sidenee. Kennedy will always be the IMT lad WHO MADE GOOD BIGTIME on IMT. Later stuff he did in Sydney were NOT anyone's radar, and most was Daytime TV which was S**t ALWAYS!!!! ps don't try to rewrite history.

2:58 i cant understand the kumquat joke as its a mandarin type fruit - Kumquats have been called "the little gold gems of the citrus family". They are believed to be native to China and were included in the genus Citrus / The kumquat tree is slow-growing, shrubby, compact, 8 to 15 ft (2.4-4.5 m) tall, the branches light-green and angled when young, thornless, delicious sweet yet tangy, is a winter/spring seasonal citrus fruits. Ergo, wtf is so funny about that unless he is having a go at the word cum itself like semen or something wtf explain? as he laughs at his own jokes.
@MsSusanmary8 жыл бұрын
He separated CUM and Qat ... so everything thereafter was hysterical .... a genius
@EamonThePhilogynistWalford2 жыл бұрын
Funnily enough, "quat" is a real word on its own, and it's another word for a pimple, sty or boil. It was also used as a derogatory term for young people in times past, but in this case, Graham decided to attribute it to a tiny imagined creature, thus spawning the hilarious absurdist joke you see here. ;-)
@redoz9768 Жыл бұрын
It was obvious what the joke was, and it had nothing to do with semen.
