Graham Norton Show: episode four, season nine.
Personal note: this was not put up to offend, just to entertain. I love New Zealanders and their accent. All accents sound funny to others, and the way New Zealanders pronounce some words throws people from other countries off. Being an Aussie, I love our New Zealand cousins and I agree that our accent can sound hilarious too sometimes. Let's not hate on here please. Aussie, NZ, Irish, English, American.. who the fuck cares?
Graham, Reese Witherspoon, Robert Pattinson, Shappi Khorsandi, and Hugh Laurie hear someone talking with a New Zealand accent.

While this guy's Kiwi accent was very strong, I've always thought that Graham Norton's accent was kind of funny too. I thought that all the laughing was a pretty extreme reaction though. Maybe a little laughter, as the accent was unexpected at first, but get over it!

Graham has a very mild Cork accent, barely noticeable. A really strong Cork accent is unrecognizeable as being a part of the English language. Sound like someone's talking arabic with a potato in their mouth. Even Irish people make fun of the way people from Cork talk.
@konczk
@konczk 9 жыл бұрын
candom rommenter I really don't think he's adopted an English accent. It is still very recognizably Irish with obvious work on elocution. I knew a pair of twins in Cork who took elocution lessons and had a very similar accent.
@konczk
@konczk 9 жыл бұрын
candom rommenter wouldn't he be dropping his R-s in that case? One of the main differences between the English and Irish accents is that the latter is rhotic, like the Scottish, American and Canadian accents, people don't drop their R-s.

I'm Indian, and while I've never heard someone from New Zealand speaking in real life, his accent was fairly clear to me. The only word that stumped me for a second was "ute", and I just assumed that he meant a utility truck or pickup truck. People really don't have to make such a big deal out of someone speaking slightly differently to what they're used to, sheesh.

I'm a New Zealander, originally from South Otago, so I've been paid out for my accent (long since gone) from other New Zealanders! I remember when I was living in the UK, I was told to say 'ten' and 'ten pens' over and over again for the amusement of a colleague. I had to learn to deal with that and with other ribbing with good nature. I don't understand why some Kiwis are so thin skinned. Accents are funny.

we do sound like that. as much as it pains me to admit it. It sounds worse around other accents. And to everyone from NZ who says they don't sound like this…. count to ten and you tell me if you don't say ten the way he does. We literally have to say "tan" to sound english saying ten.

what are you even on about? all i was saying was that the guy does sound like a Normal NZer. everyone was saying he was faking it and i said that it only sounds fake because its stronger around people with other accents and when you listen to it out loud. As for the "ten" … say it out loud. It could mistaken for australian saying "tin" could it not? THATS why australians mock us because they say NZers say "tin" but its merely their impression from their own accent. no need to get all defensive, it was just a comment.

Why do people laugh at the New Zealand accent im from New zealand And i have the accent
@davidkeenan5642
@davidkeenan5642 10 жыл бұрын
It wasn't really the accent they were laughing at, it was the unexpectedness of the accent. He'd said he was from East Putney, so they were expecting some form of London accent, & then bam!, he's got a full blown New Zealand accent. What was funny was the idea of someone from East Putney sounding like that, and Graham's reaction started the audience laughing. So the audience were really laughing much more at Graham. Watch it again, it was the line "When I was tin", you can see Graham think what? & then the collective laughter starts, & gets fueled by the guy referring to the Yute. The poms are very fond of people from New Zealand & Australia.

Miaew Your grammar is very good, but you should capitalise the word 'English' in that sentence. English is my first language, I though he said 'tin'. New Zealanders can speak really quickly, but if you lived with them for a few months you'd have no problem understanding what they're saying.

Robert Grant I might live in NZ but I'm from Scotland, so despite my username (used to indicate geographical location) I am not a Kiwi. I can assure It's just not funny. It's a lame attempt at comedy. It's exaggerated, not done particularly well and not very imaginative.

He's got a weird Kiwi accent, it sounds like he grew up on a North Island farm then went to live in Aussie for a while, that way of saying 'ten' as 'tin' is definitely not any kind of Kiwi I've heard (yes I am a New Zealander) either that or he's exaggerating it to get exactly the reaction Graham gave him, that would be a very Kiwi thing to do - we call it 'taking the piss' basically its a friendly form of teasing people.

candom rommenter It's strange how different places and accents can change what things sound like. For example, I'm a New Zealander, and when I hear an American say ten it sounds an awful lot like tan.

You guys should realise that this is a KZbin video, ripped from TV, that has gone through a few compressions, and you're all hearing it through different devices, so how he sounds here to you, may not be how he sounds in real life. To me, he sounds like someone who has a stronger Kiwi accent, but nothing I've never heard before, and I'm an Aucklander.
