Rimbaud stopped writing poetry at 21, yet I recall one of the best literature teachers I ever had telling us that he did more for French literature in five years than Victor Hugo ever could in 70 years of life, and I think that speaks volumes for his talent and the disarming sincerity of his writing

Sorry I'm gonna have to bitch a little bit, but as a French, even though we all know here that Rimbaud the genius everyone says he was (he might be my favorite poet along with Baudelaire), let's not exaggerate ; Victor Hugo is one of the most important (if not the most) french writer that has ever lived and his work is really way more powerful and influential than Rimbaud's That said, I'm not denying anything said about Rimbaud apart from that.

Man, I always get so pumped up and excited based on your reviews, and then I look at my 'to read' list, let alone the books I've already bought and left unread on my bookshelf and I feel so overwhelmed! I've never heard of Rimbaud, but I think this one may just skip the queue and get read next. Good to have you on my screen again Cliff.

Love Rimbaud, one of the major inspirations for my own writing. I absolutely adore watching your reviews Mr. Sargent. Might I suggest The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov. Fantastic book. Just finished it. One of the greatest books I've ever read, and, in my opinion, one of the greatest ever written.

The movie "Total Eclipse" (1995) is a biopic of Rimbaud portrayed by Leonardo Dicaprio. River Phoenix is Hollywood's prefect embodiment of Arthur Rimbaud, young, wild, talented and beautiful !

Very glad to see you're back. And with Rimbaud too! He certainly gave us an alternative to poetry of purely concrete stuff. Without Rimbaud, for instance, no John Ashbery, and no Frank O'Hara.

Hey again! Looking through your list of videos i have to say i didn't fully realize earlier how similar of tastes we have in books so bravo! You've already done so many of my favorite books. Blood Meridian being one of them, so damn good. Well here's a few more suggestions. Gravity's Rainbow by Pynchon, very crazy book, i'm in the middle of it now. I think you'd be perfect to review The Stranger/Outsider by Camus. Catch 22, infinite jest. And i know you did Bukowski already but either Post Office or Ham on Rye, both are amazing for me. Or maybe a collection of poems by him, i don't see many reviews of poem collections. Anyway, much love brother, you're an inspiration for me, keep on doing what you love. I might read paradise lost next because of your review and seeing as i read Blood Meridian already.

Funny how I would encounter this video shortly after watching Total Eclipse over a glass of absinthe (Total Eclipse is a pretty decent film concerning Rimbaud and Verlaine's relationship if you haven't seen it). If you think Rimbaud was crazy, however, you should check out Alfred Jarry. I wouldn't start out with Ubu Roi, though. Start out with The Exploits and Opinions of Dr. Faustroll, Pataphysician. Glad to see you're back; and keep up the great videos, Cliff! And, as always, best wishes.

The review seems more a paean to the lifestyle than the book. I find that's often the case with Rimbaud, Stein and with Ginsberg. Very little enthusiasm for the actual work but much fascination with the author's milieu, friends, lovers and actions. Something for everyone, I guess.

The most amusing thing about Rimbaud is that he would hate every single one of his fans, because his poetry was pretentious shit, in his own opinion. He could probably stomach being in the same room as Patti Smith for all of 5 seconds before trying to punch her head through a wall. Nobody cared one iota about his work when he was active, it wasn't until a decade later, after numerous stories about his whereabouts being fabricated by gossiping poets that there was suddenly a sense of intrigue. His life was a lot more interesting than his work, because he was right, his poetry sucked.

Hmmm 🤔 concerning the life of this degenerate creative Arthur Rimbaud, The Words of Wise King Solomon ring true "Don't be excessively righteous, why destroy yourself? But also don't be excessively wicked, neither foolish; why DIE before your time? It is good to grasp one, and not let go of the other." Ecclesiastes 7:16-18 Just can't wait to read about Rimbaud.😵‍💫🤯
