I love how McEnroe is more interested in watching the practice tennis than doing the interview.

3:28 is amazing and shows just how good Graham is at interviewing people. He's calm, relaxed.. hands behind his back and then the ball comes... and he grabs it without even thinking. And John, stubborn as he is, brilliant as he is, gets frustrated and just throws it away. "...and I dunno about this one...", as he's handed the ball and tosses is nonchalantly... What a brilliant piece of footage!!

Great to get McEnroes thoughts on the movie, as I was watching it I thought it felt overdramatised, like too extreme that Bjorn lived for tennis with no joy in his life and that McEnroe was an asshole in all aspects of life seemed unrealistic to me so not surprised he was disappointed with it. That being said I still enjoyed the movie as a cool way to learn about the match

I thought Shia Lebouf did a great job actually, but I can see if maybe some of it might have been dramatized. At least he said it wasn’t his fault, it was how they dramatized some of it.

It was actually quite a good movie. Probably the best tennis movie I’ve seen, along with Battle of the Sexes. I think McEnroe just disparages it because he wasn’t involved, but that’s pretty much on him. Borg was involved to some degree (his son Leo even portrayed him as a junior player) and has stated that he thought they did a good job with it. Certainly some artistic license was taken to tell a coherent story, but there’s nothing in it that isn’t based on well documented events and interviews with the people involved in them.

Borg is a Swedish introvert. I happen to think he is a nice guy but he quit school at 15. Tennis was his great talent together with a marvelous coach (Lennart Bergelin) he achieved his best tennis. McEnroe is intelligent educated multitalented witty and an extrovert now a great commentator. On the court they complemented each other.

McEnroe was and is just an average guy. Never worked out as a player and ate anything he wanted. He gets mad playing tennis. Who doesn't? Just a normal dude with huge talent who was thrust into the spotlight and what you saw was real....and that's why we watched.
@brianforbes8325
@brianforbes8325 4 жыл бұрын
yeah, kepler240, we watched, but there were many times when I saw him erupt, even at himself, and I wondered whether McEnroe even enjoyed playing tennis! Same thing with Paul O'Neill playing with both the Reds and then the Yankees during the Torre era. Sometimes you wondered, did he really enjoy playing baseball?
@brianforbes8325
@brianforbes8325 4 жыл бұрын
And, I might add, his on-court behavior back in the 70s and 80s was really atrocious at time, particularly when he complained to the umpires or linesmen about the calls, Tennis is supposed to be a gentleman's and lady's game, but McEnroe torpedoed that, as have others since then. To be fair, he was not the first to complain - Jimmy Connors really established the model for complaining, but McEnroe actually made Connors look like a Boy Scout!

I walked into the tv room at my dads back in the day.. McEnroe Was at Wimbledon.. don’t remember what match..I sat and watched and when Mac went into his tirade I said to my dad..”what a disgraceful ass this McEnroe is”… he looked at me and said..”I like him!!!”” I didn’t expect that from my dad and it immediately changed me. I appreciated my dads opinion and if he was good with dad then he was good with me.. I have been a Mac fan ever since and never regret it. Great sports analyst. John’s one of the “good guys”. I saw the movie. It wasn't that good. There was no story line, plot or drama. There could have been more to this film. Borg, McEnroe and Gerulaitis always hung out at Studio 54. There must be a 100 stories there with so much hedonism at that place. Borg's relationship with Bergelin and Mariana Simonescu, McEnroe's dealings with Peter Fleming, etc. could have been explored more closely/ in-depth to make this an interesting film. Yet, the producers did nothing to make this interesting. I lost interest half way through the film.

Yes service motions like a baseball motion that's why he served so well the exaggerated rotation is because of his back he had a injured back he was stretching it but the extra rotation and service provides power but you have to truly understand how he serves in how it looks and what the results are are two different things also a lot of people imitate the look but they don't understand the results vice versa the secrets to how he serves the ball is really be hard for the guy watching him play and making observations to determine how he does it

The only difference is that most tournament level tennis players start at a very young age and never play other sports growing up. In the great ESPN 30-30 profile "Fire And Ice" John said he quit the soccer team because he didn't like having to follow the directions from the coach. By the way Fire And Ice was much more informative and entertaining than this, at least to me, disappointing movie.

Yes thing is you I started you have to study a lot of books to understand John mcenroe you know there's a lot of books out there talk about his match play while he was on the tour that gives you a closer look at what it was really like back then the competition the players went went on in the matches on the tour traveling around the world the different personalities that's really what the movie should have been about that way you get a glimpse into yesterday and what it was like and what these guys went through and what they were feeling and really not a movie like trying to act like John mackerel but what was he like his personality the different types of players now they interacted whether they liked each other this gives you a feeling the matches what went on the matches this is what would make a good movie inside the personalities of the players

I enjoyed the film, but I felt it was weakened by La Beouf. There's acting, and then there's having a convincing, solidly based, authenticity; he just didn't come across as internally strong enough to be McEnroe. I think that's why John McE didn't like the film; especially as the actor who played Borg actually did bring those essential aspects.

Just give them some wigs and 1980 clothes, Howard Stern did it in his movie.
