Such a great interview. He’s such an awesome commentator. Love how he did his research and talked to Connors and found out why commentating didn’t work for him as he knew they had similarities.

I love John narrating matches. If there are different stations narrating a match, I always look for the one John is on.

John is way smarter than most, he’s a legend on the court & shines just as bright in the booth. Thankyou kindly John !!

I wish more sports commentators would follow Johns lead. Thats was the one benefit of covid before they piped the crowd noise in was being able to hear the players and coaches on the field, and less blathering commentary.

A man of many, many talents and gifts. Let's not forget he is a superb musician married to a woman with pipes so strong, she was considered for Van Halen! Aging very well. The older he gets, the better he gets. Rock on with your roll, Mac. You're one of the best.

John was the best tennis player ever during the eighties and the beginning of the nineties. Following this epoch we discovered that he is also a very smart gentleman in the real life. He is an outstanding and very talented person I admire and I respect. Thank you John for all what you did and you continue to do.

Bud Collins on NBC set the standard for tennis commentating, but John & Patrick have done a great job bringing interest to a new generation of tennis fans.

McEnroe and Carillo are the absolute best commentators in Sport !!!!! .......and EXACTLY for the reason McEnroe gave at the end of this interview....they both know the intensity of the moment needs no comment. MOST COMMENTATORS LOVE THE SOUND OF THEIR OWN VOICE AND RUIN THE ACTION ! That is only one reason why they are the best , and a huge reason it is , and others are that they know what shot selections should be played at a particular point in the match , the psychology used by each player and the benefits derived by that psychology. The intricate knowledge of the game along with their passion for greatness achieved by the players at any point in the game is enhanced by their engaging personalities. I know that I am getting the best experience of Tennis when they are calling the play.

McEnroe was a great tennis player, but he was an arrogant jerk on and off court.Saw him play an exhibition in Charlotte back in the 90s with Connors, Borg, and Lendl. Mats Wilander was the backup and he actually filled in for Borg who was there but injured. Connors won the exhibition going undefeated in one set matches against the other three. After the matches I went down to the court area to see if I could meet any of the players and get tennis magazines with tjeir pics on the cover signed. The only two who came by where I was were Jimmy and John. John came by first and when I politely greeted him and asked for the autograph he gave me a hateful look, said nothing, and acted as if he wanted to smack the hell out of me. I waited a couple more minutes and Jimmy came by and I greeted him, congratulated him, and spoke with him for about 20 seconds and he thanked me for coming to the match as he signed my tennis magazine with his pic on the cover. Also had the pleasure at intermission of going to the concession stand to get a beer and the person in line ahead of me also got a beer and it was the prop comedian Carrot Top. We spoke for a minute and he was very nice and friendly. McEnroe was the only jerk I encountered that evening.

Here in Fl. we get lots of Mc Enroe type transplants from NY unfortunately, ie, pushy, neurotic, hurried, and self-absorbed, btw, he never actually shut up..

Greg Maggio but none of those guys were ever world no 1 in tennis . But ive met a lot of people like you though. Bitter, judgemental, jealous and a couch potato.

Greg Maggio you don’t love the game obviously if you can’t appreciate how great he is as a commentator. He was a great player at his time. Brad Gilbert is what you describe noise annoying never being able to shut up.
