Grain Fort is a former artillery fort located just east of the village of Grain, Kent. It was constructed in the 1860s to defend the confluence of the Rivers Medway and Thames during a period of tension with France. The fort's location enabled its guns to support the nearby Grain Tower and Garrison Point Fort at Sheerness on the other side of the Medway. It was repeatedly altered and its guns upgraded at various points in its history, before being decommissioned in 1956 when the UK abolished its coastal defence programme. It was subsequently demolished. The remnants of the fort are still visible and have been incorporated into a coastal park.

the sheer amount of work involved in digging out is mind blowing, let alone all that beautiful brickwork, and remember most of the mortar mixing would have been done by hand to, and the making of the lime, there must have been a lime kiln close by, this was done by real men, not the fairies you see on building sites these days, i doubt there are bricklayers about to day who could do this sort of work, absolutely amazing what can be done by huge physical effort and hard work

It's incredible to think of the amount of work that went into these fortifications in such a short amount of time, you can only imagine the hard work and conditions must have been awful. Sad to think that so many have just now been dismissed and mostly demolished like this one and many more we've explored over the years 😔

it is so sad to see the deterioration of these tunnels. i have seen a few films of these tunnels in the past from the likes of sub exploration and IKS and on looking back on the films it highlights how much damage and graffiti has been done over just a few years. great film to watch.

Yes these structures are all slowly deteriorating soon to be lost forever i fear.. Thats one of the main reasons why we film them so there's a good amount of documentation to look back on when they are gone.. We are hoping to return back to Grain this year if we can to do a better job filming all the military history around the area, just a shame we live so far away as its a fascinating place to visit. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment 🙂

Nice adventure and those tunnels are awesome to explore. We have so many tunnel systems in Kent from Victorian times and used through the wars too, so much amazing history but many are very unstable now sadly. Take Care and Happy New Year

@ExploringWithEmAndStu

Not really... You literally have to hunt around the whole of the country park in the hope of stumbling across the entrances, You can find some old diagrams of the fort online which show its layout but there not much help in reality..
