I think drones would be great to sample the grain in field using cameras and sensors rather than disturbing the crop. Also a help in harvest to check temperature on bearings etc. and ahead of crop to check for anything the combine or bailer could cause a blockage or breakdown.

Those environmental stewardship strips and headlands are so important too in so many ways. Why farmers plough (or lightly till) right up to the hedge base and leave no space for beneficial insects and predators of their crop pests is a mystery. Taking up every inch of land in the hope that your crops will yield a few more quid for you financially is not the way forward nowadays. Best wishes, Tony.

If you watch the latest from ' Harry's Farm ', he's effectively being paid to set aside HALF of his land next year. Given he's just combined almost a million pounds worth of grain, there must be big incentives not to produce. But when the world is in such turmoil and we have the biggest population ever, we should be producing as much of our own food as possible. I think in Wales they have made farmers set aside 20% of their acreages and of course planting trees on productive land now attracts big subsidies. Those in power are proposing to take land for building houses. All of which means less food is grown.

@@skipmole612 Thanks. Agreed, I do watch Harry’s channel and he is only doing what many farmers are doing in England now, following the money. All to different extents but in my opinion and experience it is when you strike the right balance between food and wildlife production your farming system and eventually your finances should benefit. I notice this in the data I collect through my research studies. Continuing to farm on the chemical treadmill is getting very expensive and regulations are encouraging people to think differently. Just like the wildlife, only the strongest and bravest farmers will survive. Sad but true and to be fair the growing (rapid growth and we all know why) UK population should be paying much more for their produce as well. Best wishes, Tony.
