I'm an old-timer that shot film most of my life. Now that I'm 73 yrs old, my elderliness has caused me to stick with digital. Now that I have money, either format suits me fine but because of the money I've got all kinds of digital brand mistakes like 5 Hasselblad HC's up to an HC5/60 which does shoot nice stuff but it's probably more useful as a boat anchor because of its weight. But I like you best of the young guys out there on You Tube, mainly because of your humor but also because of your logic. Doesn't it make more sense to have the lighter silver stripe out when exposed and the black stripe out when not exposed yet? Duh. I could never figure it out why the opposite was adopted by the populace? Anyway, keep on keeping' on, as they say. I'd like to speak more but my arthritis restricts any more typing. Great channel Grainy!!! Oh, but one more thing, - why do you young fellas like to shoot grunge, ya know stuff like broken down old houses and cars and such. I feel like its laziness. It's simple because not one is around to bother you and it doesn't move, but, and everybody always has a big but, that kind of stuff is the most mundane and least desirable stuff to look at. How bout getting your imaginations flowing a little more and only shoot the harder stuff? I used to shoot garbage and stuff of that nature but I got out of that soon after seeing that most people, (especially women), like to look at happy things or even controversial stuff and well, you know---harder stuff. But, you're still great and keep up the cool videos.

I'm one of the oddballs who use white for exposed or empty and black for unexposed. It makes sense to me plus no one wants to borrow a film holder when they run out of their own. Yes, I thought about this ahead of time. Congratulations on your new acquisition. Handheld is more your style anyway, so I think it was a good choice. Kodak, he's taken the bait, go ahead and release that new Aerochrome in 4x5 for the poor little fella. Not 35mm or 120 yet, though. Mountain Dew still has a tanker full of that awful crap to get rid of.
@philclarkart2 жыл бұрын
I've always thought of it as white like a blank sheet of paper for unexposed, and black for exposed as if the paper has been marked on. Plus I was taught in school that that's how the holders were supposed to be used. Though it obviously really doesn't matter as long as you can keep it straight for yourself.

Same. Black = no light, white = light.

One solution I like is sealing unexposed ones with strips of tape. Broken seal = exposed.

Well in my head I think film is being exposed to photons hardening the silver crystals making them black. So therefore I know black is exposed and white isn't.

When I think "hand held 4x5" the first thing that pops into my mind is "Speed Graphic' -- in fact that's been the case since I first read "Graphic and Graflex Photography" around 1970. I've got one (finally got in in 2006, after missing an opportunity at a pretty complete kit in 1979 because I couldn't spare a third more than my rent). It's awesome. I can use lenses with shutters, or lenses without shutters (like the 135 mm Tessar I keep on it, which is mounted in a shutter, but the shutter is an empty shell, with only an aperture iris). I bought a Graflok conversion back for the 1940 Anniversary Speed (which came with a spring back), specifically so I could mount a Lomograflok, and now I have one of the world's weirdest instant cameras. I've also got three Grafmatics, so when I have them all loaded I can whip off eighteen exposures as fast as I can operate the Grafmatics and rewind the focal plane shutter (or cock and fire a dial-set Compur, if I mount one of my plate camera lenses instead).

All lenses made in the US post 1939 are coated. Post 1941; all lenses are hard multicoated. The purple w circle is marked for wollensak’s “wocoated” hard coating. Yellow &/Or Puple Dots are indicative of weatherisation. Purple I believe indicating low temperature grease; yellow indicating UV optical resin instead of traditional canada basalm. Kodak had a circle around an L; for “lumenised” hard coating. Furthermore, almost all Kodak Ektars from 1940 to 1970, are thorium glass.

one tip about the flare in that negative, use a hood all the time, and if needed, use the dark slide to shade the lens from the sun, also the slot in the film holder, if the felt is old, it can let light in. a polarising filter is also a great idea, to stop any reflections.

Any halfway decent post war lens will be coated to some degree. Your lens appears to have SN G59417. According to the Wollensak Serial Number list, this means it was produced in 1969. It is most definitely coated. It is quite easy to tell if a lens is coated just by looking at it.

AWESOME! I just bought a Linhof Technika IV 4x5 before Christmas. I haven't shot with it yet. Still practicing loading in a changing bag, but looking forward to talking it out. It is possible to handhold it, the weight is similar to the Pentax 6x7, but I'm going to keep it on a tripod. Glad to here the Cinestill 4x5 sheets and 220 is still happening.
@ralph95vip2 жыл бұрын
Not really handheldable. You need to hold it, while focusing and looking at the ground glass. Those two maybe doable, but then you ll need to slide in the film holder and remove the dark slide. Yeah. Good luck doing that without moving the camera which is likely to throw it off focus. Just use a tripod. It's much easier.
@justinmueller95792 жыл бұрын
Is actually do-able! Technika have a rangefinder and a viewfinder accessory, so load film holder, pull the darkslide, focus compose and fire shutter
@adamruzzamenti37622 жыл бұрын
Man, I dropped in on a bunch of those cheap holders too. Turns out you can't flip the dark slides which is probably why you double exposed. A caution to anyone wanting to buy those.
