Most people don't know it, and I didn't know it until many years later, but Gram Parsons was one of the best musicians that ever picked up a guitar and sang a country song, or any other kind of song for that matter. His music still lives on, 40 years later.

I don't agree with the superlatives. Gram did not sing on pitch. He was an average guitarist and he wrote some good songs. He was a rich kid who succumbed to drugs and alcohol, often irresponsibly not showing up for performances and leaving his bandmates of whatever band he was in to pick up the pieces. Clarence White who WAS one of the best musicians ever to pick a guitar, and a quiet guy, once threatened to kick the shit out of Gram for his onstage antics, look it up.

@@MrMusicguyma Gram sang on pitch when he was sober and when he was playing with the the Byrds he had not yet succumbed to drugs in the same way he had by the later years of the Flying Burrito Brothers. Roger McGuinn also completely chewed him out off any credit for the songs he wrote for Sweet Heart of the Rodeo. McGuinn agrees that Grams vocals were better on the songs he wanted to sing on and he cut them anyway because of his jealousy. Sweet Heart was almost entirely Grams idea and with it the birth of country rock. The original conception that the Byrds had of sweet heart of the Rodeo was nothing like what it became once Gram partnered up with the band and him and Holman started brainstorming.

No joke ! I was singing Byrds songs with Chris Hillman in Zürich some years ago,we spend some time at the lake playing guitar and talking about how sad, weird and confusing the loss of Gram Parsons was ! After being with Keith Richards he completely changed...Keith was seducing him to take Heroin, because he had no compañon taking H with him, step after step Gram was sliding more down into addiction and he simply became to weak mentally and phisically to change his way...finally it cost his life ! Keith just went on doing his things,so he is not the kind of friend grieving too long. Chris Hillman was right,a true friend cares about the life and wealth of others ! They even stole his corpse to bury it in the desert, but they were so stoned and drugged they messed all up...after the family had to recover the few bones that were left in the middle of nowwhere, still frightened from what was happening ! Chris Hillman is one of the nicest rock musicians i ever had the pleasure to meet, and it was an awesome day, that i never forgot ! A righteous, smart and open minded man, much to rare in this world ! Thanks Chris :)

I remember when 'Sweetheart of the Rodeo' first came out. I could not believe what I was hearing. I was a great Byrds fan AND a big country music fan. I loved the LP; But as it was originally issued, G.Ps lead vocals had been removed from the LP and replaced by McGuinn singing lead. 'Sweetheart' was recorded at Columbia studios whilst G.P. was still under contract to LHI . The original mix with Gram's lead vocals was not issued until many years later, but all his tracks are now available.

Gram was a pioneer and the principal architect in merging two musical cultures to forge what we regard today as “Country Rock”. He paved the way for The Eagles, Lynyrd Skynyrd, CCR, Allman Bros, Linda Ronstadt, Grateful Dead, Rolling Stones (in some respects), Buffalo Springfield, Doobie Bros, CSNY, Alabama, POCO and countless other artists. He mishandled the South Africa situation. Instead of boycotting the trip, he could have sat down and written a song or two about the wrongs of apartheid while, at the same time, enabling the band to fulfill its contractural commitment. What good came from Gram’s decision to not make the trip and quit the Band in protest? Absolutely nothing. Instead, this became “the” turning point in his life where his vice’s began to get the best of him, leading to his eventual death. I truly regret that Gram failed to realize that he had the creative musical ability and skill to change the world by shining a light on the “apartheid policy” in SA to help us understand what was happening and to turn a negative situation into a positive one.

@@probono9341 What a load of honey. The Byrds, prior to Gram, who was covering Byrds material at the time, recorded country music in 1965, and what would be called country-rock in 1966 and 1967. Parsons bailed on the South African tour so he could hang out with Keith Richards. All of this is well documented.

Hillman was very young and shy when he started with the Byrds playing bass guitar. It took a long time for him to get enough confidence to sing, and he does have a fine voice. Even later with the Burritos Gram said he asked Chris to sing some lead vocals, but he refused. Maybe watching Gram, who loved hamming it up, helped Hillman to relax on stage.

The whole town pulled together to bring Gram's dream back to life and if you ever find yourself in Central Florida look up their web site to see who is on the bill during the time you are there, it is something you don't want to miss,. As the key members of the Byrds--and established music veterans--they gave Gram a career lift and continued exploring new styles with him as they had done since their inception. As influential as Gram was, the Byrds were far more so, and Gram, by many accounts, had illusions of taking over the band. Roger was neither an idiot nor a saint, so the writing was clearly on the wall.

lets see- Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, George Jones...alcohol is one of the worst drugs. One thing Gram was not was a sleazy rock and roller-drug abuser no doubt but he had talent that can't be denied. What a boring world it would be if everyone liked the same things.
