@@rollotomassi6232 I agree with casting Hmong non-actors to play their assigned roles. For one thing their speech patterns came across as very genuine and brought a good contrast to exchanges with the other characters in the film. Sue was a strong character who brought a very important and very endearing "Daddy's girl" element to the film. Family is not just about blood kin..

In the beginning it's briefly mentioned that the gang terrorizes the neighborhood because everyone is too scared to talk to the police. In the end, Walter won over the neighborhood and they finally talked to the police. It's even more powerful because Walt wasn't "one of their own," but managed to tear down that barrier.

As far as how men talk to each other, I think the movie is just trying to make the point that we bust each other’s balls to be funny and desensitize each other from being emotionally fragile. There’s work to be done and we all have responsibilities, and no one wants to depend on a thumb-sucker or hang with someone who doesn’t know how to laugh.

Walt went out his way, and got the gang sent up; knowing he was terminally ill. The final scene with him laying on the sidewalk in a crucifix position, symbolized his sacrifice for Tao and Sue (Asians he owed for his finally starting to find himself again, and gaining A sense of a true family this time, after still living as a soldier in his mind). It was also him cleansing his soul of the haunt of killing the Korean (Asian again) kid in the war that wanted to surrender. He killed and was haunted by that memory of one of an Asian race; and was thus, eye for an eye old-school Walt thinking, allowed himself to be killed by other young of that race.

Many Asian cultures prohibit touching someone on the head. Another "Don't Do" in Thailand is point your toes at someone. 5. My surrogate father had that collection of tools. 😎 He didn't have all the tools in the world. Just the ones he needed. 6. Guys don't normally talk to each other like that unless they're very close (or drunk)🙄 7. Walt does have a death wish. He's sick and going to die anyway. He's a hero again🦾 He got rid of the thugs and donated the house to the church😇😇

What I love most about this movie is he's portrayed as such a bigot, but actually just hates everyone equally. But he loves people too, but not just because of how they look on the outside. His own family was horrible! But he really wasn't so bad. He didn't really hate his neighbors just because they were different. He loved them because they were just good people. That line about it's not about what a soldier is ordered to do, but what he's not is absolutely haunting.

It's called contagious fire soldiers do it everybody does it. An individual with a firearm in self-defense oneself thinks that they might have shot two or three round when they've actually shot seven or eight. So I don't I don't think it's contrived. And remember the paperwork he was going to die anyway so he might as well go out with a purpose instead of sickly. And what better purpose is there to ensure that a couple youths in actually the neighborhood youth will actually be able to live their lives. Just with gang Bangerz gang members in your neighborhood your children can't play it's not a safe space. This movie is on my top ten GOAT list. I love this movie and it can still bring me to tears at the end despite watching it a couple of dozen times plus many times here on KZbin with reactors. The vast majority of people (men!) will have tears at the end, and after the gun attack on Thao’s house. I agree with the other person who thought your reaction was “lukewarm”. 9:30 Stuff like this happens in all cultures. Every ethnic groups has street gangs. Boys who grow up without strong fathers or uncles around quickly get pulled into street life. NBA legend and Hall of Famer Isaiah Thomas was almost pulled into gang life like that. In a story that has been retold for decades, during the summer of 1966, members of the Chicago Vice Lord gang came to his home and brazenly told his mother Mary to give them her boys. She bravely told them “they already belong to the Thomas gang and I lead it” and closed the door. When she saw that they wouldn’t leave, Mary Thomas grabbed her sawed off shotgun and threatened to “blow them across the Expressway” if they didn’t leave. Isaiah never got approached again and was never pulled into street life. The rest is NBA history. 😂🤣

15:13 There was book ( I think is was called "America's Secret Army") about the Hmong who fought for the United States in the Vietnam War. An interesting thing about it is that, in an interview on CBS News' "60 Minutes" TV show, the author of the book said that movies like "Rambo" First Blood Part 2" and "Uncommon Valor" were based on the concept that there were soldiers who were captured the North Vietnamese and imprisoned as Prisoners Of War (POWs) whom the US government knowingly abandoned to rot in communist prisons after the war ended and that most Americans think that the idea is just a myth for use in fiction, but he said "IT ACTUALLY HAPPENED! It's just that the soldiers (i.e. POWs) we abandoned weren't American citizens" referring to the Hmong soldiers who were captured while fighting for the US, were imprisoned and tortured and were never released and that the US never even tried to help them after the war ended.

It doesn't mean the Vietnamese forces didn't commit terrible crimes, just like the allies committed terrible war crimes in and after world war 2, but make no mistake, the allies were on the right side of world war 2..And the NVA and Vietcong were on the right side of the American war.

The issue with performances comes from Eastwoods insistence on using Hmong actors to play Hmong characters, which was not typical in film a decade ago. I didn't notice. A movie about life goes a lot smoother with people who seem like people rather than who seem like actors.
