+paul mcdowell Good point. Well acted (with a lot of unknowns), great story line, great dialogue. Clint did no fancy stuff and stuck to basics and told a great, realistic story. Maybe too realistic for whoever handles the Oscar nomination. Oscars lost major credibility with this snub.

I used to go to an old Italian barber (named Lino) like this for about 30 years. His barber shop had not changed since the 70s and he had photos on the wall of himself when he was young and of his family members and even pets. He used to chat with myself and other customers similar to that. Sometimes there would be a mature age German lady there who I loved talking to too. It's funny but I was trying to grow my hair longer and had not been in there for 6 months. When I returned, the place was renovated with new ownership. It was sleek & modern but lacked something. I haven't been back there since. I heard that Lino retired. End of an era.

I too, am still going to the same Italian barber (named Jimmy) for over 30 years also. His shop looks like it's stuck in the late 60's with magazines on the magazine rack of the same age. I will miss him and his wisdom terribly when he retires---he's 75 and still ticking strong. I just walk in and he knows exactly how I want my cut. Only difference is that he does NOT carry a shotgun on the premises like the Gran Torino barber does.

This film does a fantastic job at showing how guys who have been friends for 20+ years treat each other! The difference, of course, is that these guys are old friends. Being "un-PC" amongst good friends is just fine, but people seem to be ignoring the key part of that lesson, where he tells the kid not to start off with insults and "don't disrespect someone in their own shop". A lot of people want to be "un-PC" but without the MUTUAL respect that makes it OK.

I really love this film. And the ending was brilliant. All the racism, violence, and bullying isn’t worth in the end. The old man has seen enough killings & violence to have never wished it on this new generation. All he wants for everyone is to be a better version of themselves. I am black man & it baffles me to see our own people kill each other on the streets, and for what? It’s very sad, and I only wish if there were more people like this old man. Yah. Definitely a guy thing. Insult your close friends with new and interesting insults. I think it tells them (and you) "You are such a close friend, I can tolerate any insult you hurl at me....because there is nothing that can possibly harm our relationship.'. It kinda proves both to you and your friend (and perhaps to others), this relationship is so strong nothing can threaten it. Not even insults that would immediately be 'fightin' words' if some stranger or lesser friend said them to you. Kind of puts that friendship into a special realm. My true buds can say things to me which anyone else would be spitting out teeth afterwards.

The guy who wrote Gran Torino wrote it supposedly while sitting in a bar several blocks down the street from where I lived in NE Mpls. A white working class neighborhood that was increasingly becoming more diverse . The exchange between Eastwood & the barber in this scene I saw many times played out in small bars in the neighborhood. It was a neighborhood with a church & bar on almost every block. If you walked into the bar down the street & didn't immediately get insulted the minute you walked in the door by the bartender & the regulars you were an outsider. When you finally got insulted by the bartender then you knew you were accepted. That you were now an honorary "Nordeaster". I love this scene because it's authentic. The writer captured the essence of those old white Polish & Italian men in that area. Some may find these kind of exchanges offensive, I get that, but it's an accurate representation of what you would hear during a certain point of time in that neighborhood. Today most of those old guys aren't around anymore. The neighborhood is more diverse but it's also become more gentrified. The bars are filled with young trendy hipsters who can afford the now higher rents there. Who have no recollection or knowledge of the Old Nordeast unless they are a born & raised Nordeaster.

I spent a lot of time with my Grandfather. One would never know what hell they endured in the Pacific by the respect they gave and received publicly, but in private these guys could storm the enemy with diphtheria, yellow fever, typhoid and other tropical illnesses while watching their brothers die next to them....after a hot cup of coffee of course! Talk was cheap, actions spoke volumes. One of many lessons I became aware of hanging out with men.

Inspired yet brokenhearted by the ending, the song brought me home to the beautiful message I took from this film, that no one is beyond redemption...

Me and my buddies-- three white guys, two Hispanic guys, three Asian guys-- talk to each other like this every day, and you know what? It's fuckin hilarious and strengthens our friendship, doesnt hurt it. A real, intelligent person can tell the difference between a true insult and a friend playing. Political correctness is trying to kill that. It will not succeed.

John Carrol Lynch is a seriously underrated actor. he's one of the few actors I grew up watching that I could always find comfort simply in hearing their voice, as gay as that may sound. guess it's just a kid's thing since I started watching his movies around age 10. him, Ed Harris, and David Morse movies always brought me comfort simply by hearing their voices.

In the early 90's I walked into a tackle shop in New Haven (I think....might have been Groton) Ct. I had never been there before. It was an old shop and jammed with tackle. I'm looking around and a guy behind me yells, "What the phuck do you want!" I was in heaven. Now that was a great tackle shop. It was called Master Bait and Tackle. I bought a MB&T hat and a bunch bucktails. Those were the good old days.

Except that no Trump supporter would ever give his life for any one, much less an Asian like Eastwood's character did in the movie. Eastwood's character was tough as nails on the outside, but a real softy on the inside, would always do the right thing, and even give his life for someone else. THAT is NOT how I think of the typical Trumpian!
