Y’know, I’ve realized, the only way that actors like Jeremy Brett and David Suchet play Holmes and Poirot so successfully is because they read the books to see how their character interacts, if people like Kenneth Branagh or Robert Downey Jr. did that, we probably would’ve liked their portrayals more
@itzakpoelzig3309 ай бұрын
I don't know why Branagh even wanted to play Poirot. There was never a less Branagh-like character ever written. Now Gilderoy Lockhart, on the other hand - perfect match.
@rottensquid4 ай бұрын
@@itzakpoelzig330 My fan-casting for Lockhart has been Hugh Grant, but I thought Branagh did a great job. As for his turn as Poirot, I have to admit I adored it. Not because he's a match for Poirot. We have matches for Poirot. Long before Suchet did Murder on the Orient Express, Albert Finney knocked it out of the park in '74. So what would be the point of another actor doing exactly what they did, and probably not as well? No, I think Branagh made a clever choice in reinventing Poirot as a more dashing character. I felt like I was seeing Poirot as he sees himself, not as a ridiculous little obsessive, but as a tortured genius, profoundly haunted by the great disorders of the world he can never fix. And I wouldn't dream of depriving the world of the magnificent absurdity that was his mustache. The mustache HAD A MUSTACHE! How can you argue with that?

10:47 - when Holmes sees Watson is trying to examine the grounds like a detective, and says to Watson, “What have you come up with?”, it shows that Holmes, while being fully aware of his razor-sharp detective skills, is open-minded and allows Watson to test his own observational skills.

@@CountBeetle Doyle famously didn't remotely care what you do with the character ;) And there are good reasons to assume Holmes may have been q*eer-coded by him intentionally - not necessarily because he was supportive of gay rights (though that's not impossible considering his liberal views for the time), but because Holmes was supposed to be an antihero and a misfit anyway. The q*eer-coding simply could have been another tool to make him appear different and flawed, like the drug abuse and the mood swings. Either way, the fact that he portrayed Holmes as completely uninterested in women alone was already highly "q*eer" for the time, in the Victorian sense of the word but in the modern one as well, and it was clearly a very conscious choice by Doyle.

I don't really like gay ships all to much but these 2 are meant for each other!! I kinda wonder if sherlock is actually gay. think of it, He has never been in a relationship and isn't married. Which back then it was kinda a must to be married. yeah he has shown attraction to "the woman" but that could be a cover up.
@arthursouza73 жыл бұрын
Probably not. The attraction he feels for women seems to be very real, even if discreet. This is because Sherlock Holmes considers love and passion to be irrational factors that would hinder his strictly rational judgment. It wouldn't make so much sense for him to show it and try to hide feelings for a woman if he was gay, it would be much easier to just keep not showing it.
@cecil98813 жыл бұрын
@@arthursouza7 i dont know where youre getting the idea holmes is into irene. Its explicitly denied in the books (in fact, holmes’ lack of attraction to women is mentioned several times in the stories), and even in the granada series theres no evidence holmes felt anything for her. They met twice!
