Great breakdown, I love the inclusion of the original version of Thrawn. The one I remember. The one who's reason for an Empire was to defend against the oncoming Vong. Palpatine and Vader didn't explore the intricacies of the dark side because that wasn't either of their goals. Vader wanted order, while Ol Sheev just loved the hell out of being evil and being in control of everything. They didn't have the drive to explore the dark side like Bane, Revan of Caedus. They only used it for their own means, which worked for a long time until it didn't.

The EU Thrawn, which was cannon until Disney deemed otherwise, was much more ruthless and cunning than any Star Wars character then and now. Thrawn did kill his subordinates, but only rarely, and only after they repeatedly failed tremendously. In the EU, Thrawn told Pellion that he had met Anakin Skywalker during the clone wars but never said how and where. He also said his brother died during the outbound flight incident. Thrawn had an entire race enslaved, called the Nogrie. In the old cannon, Thrawn was right on the verge of destroying the New Republic, but he was betrayed by Ruuk and killed by him. Pellion, seeing this happen, ordered a withdrawal of all Imperial forces. He knew that without Thrawn, the Empire would not be able to prevail.

Only issue I have with Thrawn is they gave him a belly in Ahsoka which makes no sense as he trained against elite empire droids. He is a tall and athletic type of individual not a shorter and pudgy type of officer.

It begs to question...why did THRAWN get ROOK to kill the weapons officer for "NOT" knowing what LUKE would do? When Luke was pulled in to his ship from a tractor beam but LUKE ESCAPED...but Luke damaged his engines in the long run.

There is an issue that has to be remedied with any hyper intelligent character who is doomed to fail. The character is only intelligent as the author. So it becomes difficult for the author to figure out how to outsmart them. There are ways to get around this but it will be interesting to see if Disney's Thrawn falls into the same problems that happened to shows like Death Note.

The Chiss are isolationists that don't believe in pre-emptive strikes. Plus they don't want to split their forces as they're embroiled in a war far worse than Empire vs. Rebels. Edit: It's possible the Chiss invent some kind of long range communication device while he is in exile. It would explain how Thrawn could communicate to build the Eye of Sion.

Thrawn is a great character but he would not have stayed loyal to the empire. He was diametrically opposed to everything the empire was and so he may not have joined the rebellion but he wouldn't have stayed with the empire.

Because thrown was so different from the rest of the imperial machine I think it's a shame we could never see a period where he gets to rule the empire. Now I'm not saying he's right but with his generally understanding nature he would have been an interestingly complex emperor show by the examp!e the Jedi set by leaving him to his own devices in legends. Not that he would've been a monster it sometimes a dangerously tempting one at that.

I feel like star wars under disney is currently very left leaning instead of centerist as it should. So I don't think they'll explore this aspect of Thrawn. But merely paint him as a competent and efficient commander. Essentially the "genius" archetype where he predicts things. But the reasoning or logic is not shown. But merely the fact that "he's just that smart." And I feel like his soldiers won't merely be loyal but fanatical in a cult like way.

It's one of the Canon changes. They are essentially the same in terms of galactic threat, but go about it differently. The main point is that Thrawn is combating a greater evil and needs the empire to do it
