The immense Grand Canyon is a mile (1.6 km) deep, and up to 18 miles (29 km) wide. Layered bands of colorful rock reveal millions of years of geologic history with unmatched vistas from the rim.
This hike was in April of 2018. Starting in the cold air at 3 am, we hiked down the South Kaibab Trail to the river, went down river on the other side and came back up the Bright Angel Trail. This seems to be the perfect time of year to do that hike, not too cold and not too hot.
Standing on the rim it seems to be an immense canyon, but only by going all the way down to the bottom is it possible to get a sense of the scale and depth of it.
