I always love the parts at the beginning where you narrate. It’s nice to see you talk about the trains in the background, just like a museum

@sparky1071074 жыл бұрын
I have been on this train ride. what a great time. people just have to remember when you are booking a trip, you are talking to a booking agent, so you have to book by the car name that you want to be on. if you don't book the top part of a dome car, you will not be allowed up their. and you can always explore rail cars that are before your car, but you can not go beyond the car you have booked.

Mike; I'm making the assumption, it has been a couple of months since you recorded this episode. I've viewed other presentations from other railfans of the Grand Canyon Railroad. One topic which has eluded my comprehension; how is it, that in this pristine landscape, those sooty engines using oily diesel fuel, aren't kept in check with scrubbers being installed on the exhaust stacks. I fully comprehend, the steamers usually burn coal in their boilers, unless they've been converted to some other fossil fuel; so, they sort of receive a pass, similar to being grandfathered.
@CoasterFan21054 жыл бұрын
Some of this was filmed back in February with the rest from 2017 and 2018. The steam engines at the railroad both burn recycled vegetable oil now. In terms of the diesels, the newer EPA regulations do not apply to older equipment, such as the locomotives at the railroad. Getting new "Tier 4" locomotives, while nice, is very expensive and I'm not sure that the railroad has the budget to spend 6 to 8 million dollars a piece on the newer locomotives. That said, they have for the most part replaced the very old diesels from the 1950s with the F40s from the late 1970s and early 1980s, 3 of which are equipped with separate generators for passenger car electricity (mentioned in the beginning of the video). This is a more efficient option than running the main engine at a constant max RPM, which is how the F40s were originally designed.
