Perhaps because it's not the original? Where's your evidence that this is the original? The English and French Wikipedia articles cite the attribution to John Bull (1563-1628) who is said to have performed (and presumably composed or arranged) it in 1607, setting the tune on paper in 1619, predating the French attribution to Lully by 67 years. The French Wikipedia article is not at all supportive of the Lully theory or its being the original version. Lully's composition of 1686 was actually a completely different piece entitled "Domine salvum fac regem" ("O Lord, save the King"). In the French version sung here, why is there a musical accent on the last syllables of the words "sauve" and "venge"? Poor word setting originating from English>French translation after 1745?

Sorry but no. This is not a work by Lully. It sounds nothing like anything he wrote and you will not find it listed among the complete catalogue of his works. The spurious attribution only dates from 1834, 150 years after Louis's unfortunate anal pustule. What Lully actually wrote was a grand motet entitled 'Domine salvum fac regem' (LWV 77/14 - 'Lord, save the King') which bears no musical resemblance whatever to this tune.

@DityMac Actually it was written by la duchesse de Brinon, but the music was composed by Jean Baptiste Lully. You are right when saying that it was copied by GF Handel and proposed to the british throne, with the word "Queen" instead of "King" used nowadays but it is a french anthem indeed.

Long live our Guernsey, An island in the sea, Long live Guernsey; Land of the liberty, Home of the donkeys, A green island in the sea, Long live Guernsey. Oh, sarnian folk arise, Scatter our enemies, And make them fall; Confound their politics, Frustrate their knavish tricks, And this is our battle cry, “FOR DEMOCRACY!”. A land of flowers and trees, Green island in the sea, Long live Guernsey; With your great Navy rush, Sweeping that freedom brush, Rebellious brits to crush, Sarnia Cherie. Your choices gift in store, On our be pleased to pour, Long may you reign; We shall defend our laws, And ever give us cause, To sing with heart and voice, Long live Guernsey! I 💚 🇬🇬

@@thetrollgehasbegun It would be if they did; but they didn't. You just have to look at the word setting of the first line to see that the English words fit the metre of the tune and the French do not: 'sauv-e' v 'great George' (changed to 'our gra[cious]' in the modern version). The French translator was obviously working with an existing tune.

@DityMac The history of Love-Hate between France and England is always fascinating. Each of them copied, emulated and tried to superseed what the other made... Competition in its healthy form but also with its long tragedies... Both Thrones always claimed to rule the land of the other at some time which is quite confusing. But that, I let it to other fellows... Still, I always love this great melody, even if some lyrics aged not very well...

According to some, the original music ( by Lully?) is missing. So this version is perhaps a modern one, made after the God Save the King, and not the model of the God Save the King.
