@@ewan4449 Yes indeed, i would say if people know lithuania they have a relative from it Or they are fans of medieval europe but then Lithuanians are viewed as kind of enemies cuz all of europe supported teutons while lithuanians were fighting against them and russians. Abd lithuanias victory these days didnt mean anything, because look at lithuania now, which is why the reason so little people know about us. If you look at Poland maybe it isnt as big as it was but its big enough so everybody would know, what it is ,and what it was.

Is the iron wolf a symbol of the Teutonic Knights who would later descend upon the Lithuanians and others?
@Balticfolk10 жыл бұрын
ReggieJohnAgain I can see why that would be the first association to draw but, oddly enough, in this context the wolf is a symbol of Lithuanians themselves or more specifically of their capital Vilnius, rather than the Teutonic order. Many think that the main totemic animal of Lithuanians is a bear (it's featured on the crest of Samogitia) and it may very well have been so in the most distant past but different times call for different symbols. During the times of the crusades (the Northern Crusades had started centuries before Gediminas was born) it was not possible to stand tall & proud independently like a bear - as the sad example of Old Prussians had proven, Balts could only withstand the crusaders by unifying, standing like a tight pack of wolves.
@ReggieJohnAgain10 жыл бұрын
Baltic folk Thank you for that clarifying explanation. Now I have another question: Does the name Vilnius have any connection with the Lithuanian word for wolf, 'vilkas'?
@Balticfolk10 жыл бұрын
ReggieJohnAgain Place names and hydronyms derived from the root Vilk- (wolf) are indeed very common in East Lithuania, however, Vilnius name is derived from different root: a nearby brook Vilnia (Vilnelė) which in turn is derived from a word meaning "wave" because of it's fast whirling current.
@ReggieJohnAgain10 жыл бұрын
Baltic folk OK. Thanks again for another clarifying answer. I visited Vilnius in the late 1980's and found it beautiful and having a very nice atmosphere, especially when arriving through the Ausros Varta at dawn when the city was very quiet and the day's activity had not yet begun.

Because of the Westerners and Poland. Westerners kept pressure against us, while the Muscovites had an easier time with their declining enemies. So, we were fighting from two sides, while the Russians had their sight only on us. Poland played a backstabbing role, as they always do - everybody thought that they would help, but they were just looking to expand their own territory.
