I am german and Brittas boyfriend. In late 15th and 16th century a lot of german fencing masters wrote treatises about use of dagger and long sticks. For centuries no more a german style of stick of stick or dagger use exists. My father, born 1938 talked in his young years often with older men. He told me, that those elderly men carried in 1920s still canes as weapons, and a small type of knife with fixed blade called Nicker. Still today in new produced , Lederhosen ' there is a knife pocket. Even in 1980s you sometimes could find an elderly man, modern dressed, carrieing such a knife. An elderly man, i know from my hobby ( dancing ) told me , that up to his fathers young days the cattle market in town Schorndorf was important for the farmers of the region. In those days only few men had a car, so the farmers had to cross the Schurwald forrest on foot. For my Region this forrest is large, and the roads are still today a bit more lonesome than usual. So still in the days of the elderly mans father, the farmers walked to the market only in groups of three or more men, and every man carried a stick or Cane. Those farmers had not been trained in stickfighting or using their Nicker or folder as weapon, but a group of men with sticks was a protection against robbers.
