Greetings, and welcome to the world of Grand Seiko. Today I'll be your guide to the proper usage, care, and maintenance of your Grand Seiko SBGA001 Spring Drive Automatic. This timepiece, though automatic winding can be manually wound should it run down by threading the crown out until you feel a distinct pop. Now turn counter clockwise until you feel the pop, that's the crown emerging from it's threaded sleeve. Now you can manually wind the timepiece by turning in a clockwise direction in that first to full position. You'll note that the power reserve scale at seven o'clock on the dial, begins to advance towards the end of it's travel. 30 turns is sufficient to start the movement, and at that point you can put it on your wrist and the natural course of kinetic action on the wrist in conjunction with the case back winding rotor, will ensure that the watch maintains operation in the course of daily, consecutive daily use.
However, should you wish to wind the watch to it's maximum rated power reserve of approximately 72 hours, continue turning in a clockwise direction, and you'll note that the power reserve indicator comes to a halt. You can get an extra couple of turns at that point, just to be sure it's fully wound without any hazard to the movement, as the movement's been engineered to release any excess strain such they can not be manually or automatically over wound. Once you have wound the watch. There are some functions that allow precise time setting. With respect to crown positions, the position out from winding is a position where a quick set date is engaged. There are three positions that are functional with the crown. The first is winding, the second is the quick set for the date, should the watch run down or should it have come to a halt at some point, and the outermost position is for setting.
It's important to note that this quick set function should never be engaged between the hours of 10 PM and 3 AM as the watch has an automatic date jumper that transitions from one day to the next during this extended period, and attempting to use the quick set during those hours, 10 PM to 3 AM can severely damage the movement. Be cognizant of the time when you use the quick set. Now the outermost position stops the advance of the seconds hand. You can use this to synchronize precisely to a known accurate reference time such as an atomic clock by stopping the hand at the index at 12, and then advancing the minutes hand to the next nearest minute.
Wait for your reference time to catch up, and then push the crown back in, resume the advance of the seconds hand, now you've synchronized your reference time. Of course in the outermost position, where you set the time, you turn in the clock, counter clockwise fashion, and you've set the watch precisely. Quickly and easily. Return the crown to it's position flush against the case, apply slight inward pressure while threading in a clockwise direction, and you'll know that the crown is fully threaded into it's default position when it offers resistance and halts.
Now the watch is rated to 10 bar or 100 meters of water resistance, so it's important to tackle water resistance as the first of three hazards to the watch. Water resistance, magnetism, and shock. Water resistance itself isn't a hazard so much as an asset of the watch. Water is the hazard. The timepiece is rated to 10 bar which Grand Seiko believes is sufficient for all aquatic activities short of professional diving, however you can help avoid accidental drownings, because the watch is only 10 bar water resistant when the crown is fully threaded in to a stop. Thread it to a stop all the way into it's sleeve, that's the only way it attains it's factory rated water resistance.
It's also important to remember water resistance, unlike the mechanical specifications of the watch, is not a static condition and over time as seals age and lubricants degrade, water resistance will ebb, so Grand Seiko recommends minimally every 24 months, having the watch water tested at an authorized service center of Grand Seiko. Likewise, shock and magnetism post hazards to the timepiece. Magnetism in close proximity to a spring drive movement can alter the time keeping properties, and magnets are ubiquitous in daily life.
With respect to shock, there are certain activities that should be avoided while wearing your timepiece. Finally with respect to comprehensive service, Grand Seiko recommends at least every three years having the watch serviced with a Grand Seiko authorized service center. I

Great video because it provides help but I hate how it promotes only authorized dealers for repairs. Such promotion leads to blind devotion to authorized dealers and excessive overcharging even if the service quality is much worse. People should always comparison-shopping, evaluating price, technical knowledge, and other factors. This blind devotion to dealers is exactly the same reason why car dealerships end up chargeing double the amount as local mechanics and end up doing a worse job.

If setting the watch is likely to damage the movement. PLEASE say so before mentioning the function. I had a very scary experience with my new watch when I gave it a few twists on the quick date set between 11 and 3 before hearing your warning.
