Nice review. I used to own two of the watches you mentioned. A Rolex Sub no date and the newer Seamaster with the 8800 movement. The GS destroys it in the build dept. The SBGA 229 is also better built than my sub no date. It puts both Omega and Rolex to shame build wise. The bracelet goes to the Sub. GS has to do a little better there. But the case and dial finishing on the GS is close to my Lange.

FYI, I have the SBGA029 for about 6 yrs now. It is still accurate to +5 seconds/month!

Really? I own the MM600 2005, first ever Spring Drive, it's never been serviced and it's running at 12~15 seconds a year 😂

How scratch resistant is it? I am considering the SBGA081 to commemorate 30 years on this planet. The titanium looks nice, hopefully it is scratch resistant as well.

I have to retract my initial comment. I returned the SLGA001 after about one week. I first thought the bracelet felt cheap, but after comparing it to my Rolex deep sea, I thought the GS bracelet glide lock was better for adjusting it on the wrist, its hard to do that with the rolex. I since went and bought the GS SLGA001 again. Its an amazing watch. The dial is amazing!

I have a large wrist so my preference is a 44mm case. I love my Omega plant ocean but I've become obsessed with the GS SBGA229. It's stunning in every aspect! The rolex is just outdated and over priced for your stereotypical OG. Not for my generation. LOL

Most diving extensions don't account for putting the watch on then adjusting it, hence the extreme extension. Yeah, i actually dive.

Very nice watch. The box in comparison to Omega is wanting but in compared to Rolex not so. However you don't wear the box and the watch is stunning with an amazing movement. This definitely on my want list.

I am lucky to have bought a number of the big brand luxury divers over the last 10 years and honestly the GS SBGA 229 that I have it is the best. The clasp is a bit big but everything else is absolutely top draw and the watch’s wrist presence is off the scale compared to every other diver including the SD43. To me being a tall guy with big wrists it really feels like it is a man’s watch in the old school usage of the term. Easily gets the most wrist time and Grand Seiko produce amazing watches if it is this or a dressier watch like the Snowflake. I am a huge fan of GS and cannot recommend their watches enough.

I've the SBGA231! Very nice but too light weight! And looking for this stainless steel model, but not available at all! Then brought the MM300! I this SBGA229 could dive more than 300m deep?

100% The vast majority of Rolly fans have absolutely no idea about watches, much less what makes a good watch. I have had the what makes GS better conversation with a friend who has no idea about watches but collects Rolexes, he got so upset, like a child, poked his bottom lip out and wouldn't talk to me. Everything on this watch is made by hand, applied by hand, finished by hand. The contours of the case and the attention to detail is mind blowing. An Oyster case is a stamped block of SS and it looks like it is, from an industrial point it looks cool, but for lots of money I want craftsmanship. For instance the bevel on the indicies is mirror polished, by hand. Can you even imagine how difficult that must be to achieve? Incredible...

grand seimois not at th elevel of a rolex if you hold a rolex diver in your hand and hold a grand seiko in your hand. the difference is easily felt. the feel of the metal and the feel of the bracelet and clasp is just not a premium feel. grand seiko bracelet and clasp continue to be of a very low quality.

This watch does not make sense to own. It features a mere 200M of water resistance. It is not an attractive watch. And, it doe not even fit within the ecosystem of GS. Seiko exists to fill the tool watch range - not GS. If a person were really keen to have a Springdrive movement, they could own a Seiko with one inside and still secure the watch for less than the $6.000 asking price of this GS attempting not to be a Submariner clone, but still looking like a poorly executed Submariner clone. A tool watch does not need the GS touch. GS does not need a tool watch to legitimise its existence. Additionally, it seems that people have a difficult time acknowledging that Rolex is the king of this product range. When you consider how many luxury watch brands are making tool watches that - for better, or worse - emulate the same design elements as the tool watch range in Rolex's catalogue, it's pathetic how much hate Chinese brands get for offering homages at a fraction of the price. The fact that so much money is being thrown at the lesser Swiss brands for their uninspired designs that copy Rolex - without wanting to copy Rolex - should not have served as a guidance sheet for designers at Grand Seiko to get on the bandwagon. This watch looks ridiculous and GS ought to be ashamed of themselves.

Grand Seiko: Dial amazing, movement amazing, Lume amazing, Bracelet, not so much. It feels very cheaply made. Cant compare to Rolex Sub
