Thanks to the Coronavirus pandemic, 2020 has been a bizarre year, and we don't think many folks will shed a tear to see it disappear in the rearview mirror come 1/1/2021. We nevertheless spent 2020 traveling over 8,000 miles through 33 campsites and 19 states, and have great memories from every one of those stops. This video is a high-speed journey through our entire 2020 camping season in one full-length documentary, the "how" and "why" tying all of our travels together in one cohesive story. We're only top-sheeting each destination in this video, so for an in-depth look we've linked to each individual destination's episode below.

Marc, it was amazing to see your year's travel in review. It could not have been easy to pull that together while packing up and selling your unneeded things. It was a perfect way for me to settle back home after spending Christmas at my son's home with my grandchildren, and to relax. Thank you.

They sure do, Suzane! Thanks for sharing your enjoyment of the episode, it was certainly the wrong time for me to take on an edit that required >40 hours of effort, but we managed to squeak it through. We started the transition to the rig on Christmas Day and expect to wrap it up today -- barely on time. It sounds like you had a wonderful Christmas, and we're very happy to hear that.

What a beautiful recap of your heartland tour. I have enjoyed each and every episode weekly but the recap was lots of fun. Thanks for the shout out! I’m anxiously awaiting to find out where you are touring next. I know you’ll love full timing it! I’ve been full timing on and off since the mid 90s. I’m sure I’ll see you on the road. A great job putting the highlights of your trips together along with the narration. I'm about to start a similar journey in my first travel trailer and head to Arizona, so the first segment is apropos. Based in Colorado, your western adventures will provide a roadmap to go along with my own bucket list of places to see as an amateur photographer. Thanks for sharing your adventures.

Darned near gave me a heart attack. She doesn't usually wear booties, but it was the fastest way to let her pads heal, and we've always got them now for necessary occasions. Those are the Ruffwear ones, and I literally laughed out loud when I saw they had Vibram soles, complete with the Vibram logo and all.

It was crazy that the USFS closed so many boondocking sites to fight corona virus. Didn’t make a lick of sense. Luckily our 4x4 camper can get waaaaay back there, much farther than the government’s two wheel drive ranger trucks can go. And later in the year most of the ND, Montana, and Wyoming state parks were empty, so we enjoyed the peace and quiet! Yep, it was a weird year.
@GrandAdventure
@GrandAdventure 3 жыл бұрын
Yep, a lot of that made no sense at all to us. For example, when we were in Sedona the USFS closed many of the more popular hiking trailheads to maintain social distancing -- which only meant that instead of spreading people out, the less popular trailheads that they didn't close had 3x as many people hiking. It was a bizarre year, yet it was no riskier for us traveling in an RV than it would've been locked down at home. Either way you're still getting groceries, pumping gas, etc.
@rd4660
@rd4660 3 жыл бұрын
What really frustrated us was that all USFS and BLM offices were closed to the public. We like to stop by and get maps and advice. Not this year. There was two exceptions, the BLM office in Dillon, Montana and a USFS ranger in Minnesota. The Dillion, Montana BLM office door was locked but I called the number on the door. A very nice lady answered and said “Come on in, I’ll unlock the door!”. She was sooo helpful with finding boondocking spots and gave us a list of her favorite spots. She was so thankful that we called because all summer she was in the office with no visitors. In northern Minnesota all the USFS campground were closed, all of them. Grrrrr. We were parked outside the closed gates of one campground near Cass Lake looking at our maps and a very nice ranger lady drove up gave us directions to her “secret” camping spot. Oh lordy! It was a smallish USFS road with a lake on each side of the boondock site. It was unreal!

Thanks E! We too look forward to crossing paths one day. We'll be mixing in gear, techniques, etc. mostly during the colder months, and focusing primarily on travel during the warmer months. Right now we're not enjoying our typical lead time on videos (this one was only ready literally hours before Premiere time, way too close for my comfort). We burned away our usual 4-week lead time while downsizing and preparing to move out of the house. But if we can get it done, for example we're planning to install, test and profile the RV Whisper system for next week's episode.

Thanks Marc. What a great tour! I can hardly believe you covered it all. Fond memories, even from this remote viewing side. Although there were many lovely video images, the one that stood out as being the most memorable... is you walking in the brilliant green woods in that bright green t-shirt. It just really wowed my eyes to see that. I think that was somewhere in Tennessee. Gord
@GrandAdventure
@GrandAdventure 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Gord! I believe that the scene you might be referencing was hiking at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore on the UP of Michigan. For a westerner of 16 years, now mostly used to varying shades of brown, that was green sensory overload for me. But oh so beautiful! In a subsequent clip, just a few seconds later you can see that I just paused for a moment to pan the lens across the forest. It was a remarkable moment.
@gorrdd
@gorrdd 3 жыл бұрын
@@GrandAdventure Cool... it wasn't just my eyes playing tricks on me. Even on the video the intensity of the green was like WOW!!! And then your t-shirt was the same shade and it's like your coming through the intense green and your clothes are getting covered in it. The combination of all those things made me stop and take notice how unusual it was. And then to hear that is exactly the kind of sensory overload you experienced in the moment... was just great. Every once a while in a lifetime you experienced a visual sensory overload like this when the lighting conditions are perfect. I recall back around 1989-1990 one evening on Siesta Key beach in Sarasota at sunset, something very unusual like this happened. Sunsets are beautiful over the Gulf of Mexico. But when the atmosphere, the earth's exposure in its it's orbit around the sun placing the sun on the horizon at just the right place, the clouds on the horizon set up in a certain way, and the gentle lilt of the Gulf water near the shore caused some dramatic sensory overload effects. In this evening, as the sun was setting, the lighting went through three major phases. The first phase resulted in the sun reflecting off the Gulf at a distance, casting a blue-green hue against the bottom of intermittent broken clouds and then reflected back down on the shore line. What was reflected was mostly blue blue-green... but it was an iridescent shade of blue blue-green that was really intense and sparkled off the gentle lilt on the waters surface. Within a few minutes, this then turned from iridescent blue blue-green to an iridescent shade of blue-green. And as the sun began to set more it cast down golden yellow light over the Gulf that was reflected off the intermittent clouds and back down onto the shore line. As a result, the blue-green iridescent hue gave way to a bright yellow iridescent hue. And as the sun set further the iridescent yellow turned into deeper and deeper shades of iridescent golden hues. The effect was so dramatic that many of the people on the beach stopped what they were doing and just looked around at what was happening in a kind of hush of silence. I never forgot that experience. And it has never happened again like that in my presence in all the remaining years I lived in Sarasota. It was a once in a lifetime experience. Gord
