I wish I could have one of those. I would love to buy them. My Grandaughter is Inupiat. Born in Kotzebue. I am raising her and would love to learn and teach her the language. It is important for me that she learn her history and traditions.

I used this dictionary in class at UAF. It made me very happy. I wondered about her and her family. I was very proud to even be able to have a copy of it. I am 41 now. Our language is very difficult. I love learning all languages. I feel a little guilty when I study other languages, but I know we love all people too. Sometimes when we want to avoid conflict, maybe we avoid things that can move us forward. Its possible that our parents wanted us to avoid conflict and didn't teach us our language, or maybe didn't interfere. We can decide what is conflict or not, and I also think learning our own language is a good choice that can bring us forward.

Who bullied your people? The missionaries, fellow classmates, etc? I think it's wonderful you are making efforts to not let this language disappear. One thought..the missionaries may have had 2 things in mind...they could not communicate in your language, thus taught your people English to communicate with you. Secondly the world was becoming more global and teaching English would help your people in a more modern, traveled world. But I do believe the language and culture should be preserved!

Jan Warriner, I'm afraid your hope the missionaries were well meaning is somewhat irrelevant to the discussion today. Whatever their intentions may have been, the horrible horrible abuse off disrespect of human life they demonstrated all across Canada as well as Alaska, is well documented. As a Canadian it is a huge national shame and cultural genocide similar to the holocaust in many respects.

And yes it was the missionaries, not fellow classmates.
