My great grandparents raised me. They were both just put in a nursing home. My grandpa has Alzheimer's and is progressing quickly, but growing up without a dad, that will not stop him from waking me down the isle when I get married in the next year, and this will be the song that plays during our "grandfather daughter dance" ❤️

My grandpa would've been turning 80 in a couple weeks. He passed away in 2009. I miss when we had the cottage on the lake and he'd show me how to fish, and I loved driving around town in the car with him listening to the old music on the radio with the AC on full blast. and not having a care in the world. He may have looked intimidating but he was one of the most caring men I ever met. Grandpa loved to tell jokes and get us to solve riddles and brain teasers. He loved every one of his children and grandchildren and especially my grandmother--he was heartbroken when she died, then he got sick a short time later. They are forever reunited in heaven now.

Mine was crazy. And mean. Raised his kids to be violent. Lived in abandoned buildings when I knew him. Me and my siblings suffered from his legacy, tried to overcome it, and mostly survived to do it, but still got not much of anywhere with what we were given. The good old days was also when a violent drunkard could make 13 people suffer and pass on that suffering to another 68 people.

It was such drudge work to spend summers working on their ranch. But many of my best memories came from it. It was years later, they were out on their porch just after sunset watching cattle pass by and were laughing. Grandma explained. Cowboys used to herd the cattle pass in the morning and take them to a pond to water them. At sunset they would bring them back to their corrals. She said there's no cowboys anymore but the cows still take themselves to the pond and see, they're bringing themselves back. She was right, no one was leading them. They're both gone now, I hear this song and my heart breaks.

When I was a kid my grandpa had one of those big old sliding cassette holders that had three sliding sections in it. On the left side, he kept the tapes that he would listen to when I was around. Bill Monroe, Ricky Skaggs, some old Du-Wop groups, and the Judds. The rest was filled up with tapes like Conway and Loretta, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash and others that he didn't think a young boy should be listening to. I listened to this song a million times throughout my childhood and seeked it out this morning after my wife and I have been having some problems. The words ring as true today as they ever have.

I lost my grandfather two days before my 20th birthday and when he died it just about killed me. He was always the family rock, he kept our family mended together. I remember going to his house during weekends or even for summer. Believe it or not I'd look forward to waking up at 6:30am to go help him feed our ducks and take care of the garden. I loved it. So many young kids these days don't know what they have. I miss my grandpa so much and would do anything to be able to run up to him and him wrap his arms around me. He used to callme "Pig" bc when I laugh I snort. Idk if you heard it but the song, "If Heaven Wasn't So Far Away" reminds me so much of him. I will keep you and your family in my prayers. God Bless

God Bless

I have a lot of respect for this song, they used to play it on the radio when I was little! It really makes you see how different life was than life these days. You can tell there are also more vulgar languages these days being used in public and it becomes the norm to speak in very disrespectful manners even in songs, etc...the things that people in the older days wouldn't do because it was considered shameful now people these days are very shameless and mannerless and think they're so free to do whatever they want.

Almost 6 years ago, I got together with my family clan, and we decided to have a family reunion. It was a surprise for our grand parents/parents. I asked my Aunt, and her daughter to sing this song for our grandparents....they learned the song together, in 3 days, and on that day nearly 70 of us celebrated our roots in Kansas. A little over 2 years later, both our grandparents had passed, oh, but a day..when that song was sung, on the Kansas prairie.....

Sandy Merimee I sympathize with you. Never had the opportunity to know any of my grandparents. At over 50 years of age, I only became aware of a couple of their names just recently. Only picture I have of me with any of my grandparents is a picture of me with my mom's adoptive mother. I was a newborn in that picture. Don't have any pictures of me with any of my biological grandparents. So yes, I sympathize with you. It's like a part of you is missing. That's why I take so much time interacting with my two precious grandchildren. I don't want them to ever have that emptiness in their souls.

+ourenergyfuture, So sorry to know! I loved my grandma's. They both were widowed at a very young age. My mom was 11 and my dad 16 when they lost their father's. Your grandchildren are very blessed to have you and know your love for them. I have 4 grandchildren and one on the way due next month. I am not allowed to see my oldest two because my daughter doesn't want to be in my lie anymore. 7 years now and I grieve for all 3 of them. I can only pray my daughter comes back to me before I leave this world. We aren't getting any younger and I am missing so much of their lives. My daughter started back in church and taking the kids...There is hope....

Sandy Merimee I can't even imagine how it would feel not to be able to see my grandchildren. I am so sorry for your situation and will be praying for you and your daughter. I pray that your daughter comes to understand just how important it is for her children to know their grandmother.

ourenergyfuture , that hurts. Being the very best granddad ( and dad) that I could and certainly with my grandchrildern to be not included in the member and knowing part really hurts. And you did that.

I never listened much to "country" music until I was assigned to Marine Corps recruiting duty in Muskogee, OK, in 1989. I spent around 7-8 hours a day, (weekdays) driving between the small towns in my territory. Garth Brooks was just blowing up the airwaves, followed by Clint Black and the rest of the "hat acts". I liked the Judds and Allison Krausse when I heard them., especially Alison's version of "baby, now that I've found you". I didn't know it was a cover until I found Kieth Whitley's original on youtube.Well, not really a "cover" The "country" labels buy songs 4 some of their acts who don't write their own songs, Like Kelly Clarkson does. IIRC, she wrote "a moment like this" just for "American Idol".
