You are right @mysticlady603. Even these dogs when they were pups didn’t bother the chickens. They were more curious than anything. Smokey used to have her moments when she would chase the chickens and want to play. She would put a paw on one and that would be the end of it.

WHAT? Animals do too have feelings. 2 of my cats that spent 20 years together, just died 7 days apart. Believe me, my heart broke during the attention shown while they crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Now the other 2 cats are struggling to live without their adopted parents. 😢😢 Matt, rethink that one.

So sorry about Sassy. It’s natural for dogs and cats to go after birds whether they are in a farm setting or in your home the sound and the flightiness/wing flapping of the bird gets a dog excited and they go into flight/fight mode. It also depends on the breed of dog as to whether or not they can be trained out of that response. Ralph I appreciate that you immediately said it’s life on a farm. Revel and Rylie are incredible and this was instinctual for them. I guess you could start wing trimming but it would put the chickens more at risk with their predators if they’re free roaming. Hard day of farm life and glad Matt was there with you. ❤️❤️

Sorry for losing Sassy! She was a special chickie bird. She was on a learning curve, and went to close to the edge! I was asked at about age 4 yo, why I had fallen out of bed? I quickly replied "I got to close to the getting in place!" Better days ahead!

Way to go Matt...you have created a new game! Played much like Frisbee tag but with Cucumbers.. you could also use Zuchinni and as you slice aim for the bowel..points made for direct hits, misses can be rinsed and used again for play or food prep. Favorite meal with Zuchinni is to slice it, an onion sliced too, 3 garlic cloves,sliced/diced, sauteed in olive oil and sprinkled with mozzarella til melted!

My granddaughter Autumn Rose was sent home seemingly doing better, then wound up having 2 seizures in a row and fell and banged her head, back in the hospital and has a concussion. Sorry for your loss Grandpa. I know it was upsetting for you since Sassy had been there so long. Hope her baby or any of the other chickens don't suffer the same fate. I thought maybe since the pups were there since they were so young, they might be used to the chicken's presence and maybe not bother them if they came in the dog pen. Kim I see the LGDs responsibility as guarding the farm as a whole but not guarding the chickens area specifically. Their presence on the farm is to deter predators. The chickens have the chicken palace, the coop and an electric fence (which I can turn on if necessary) to protect them. The LGDs primary job is to protect the goats. The chickens are not supposed to be in the same area as the goats and LGDs. Sassy went into their pen. I don’t feel like that was the dogs fault so I can’t put the blame on them.

Sorry to hear about Sassy! RIP girl! ❤️🙏🏼 It does take a while to train some LGD’s to not hurt the smaller livestock. Hopefully as they get older you will be able to get them trained. I finally got mine trained to the point now that they can just lay around and the chickens will climb all of them and they don’t even move.
