No way should OP take those grandparents to her house. They did not acknowledge her as family, do why should she. Also, OP should have gone to the attorney the moment she found her money gone and taken them to court to get it back. 😻😁😻

You are very wrong in this case. Yes: They had "authorization to make financial decisions" for her; But they were legally required to use the funds for her benefit. I don't think any court would agree that giving the money to her brother, like they did, would be for her benefit. @@tsm688

She got her entire college fund stolen... didn't get gifts or needs met, verbally abused and then got disowned. Every single one of them allowed and participated in that happening. Just a single one of them doing the right thing would have changed her future. She could not take them in anyways... it was a shared apartment They reaped what they sowed. She is still going to have a mountain of debt to deal with after school.

Her grandparents took every conceivable moment to taunt her about not being family because they were not blood related. If I were OP I don't think I would have even gone as far as she did. You let family & friends stay with you when times are tough. Since the grandparents had made sure she knew she wasn't "family" to them & they made sure to show their contempt towards OP quite plainly, OP was in no obligation to help them. They were "strangers" since they didn't share blood or friendship, not to mention, they never shared ANY love. Karma had arrived on their doorsteps. I remember, many years ago, hearing a social worker say that if you are thinking of adopting a child the entire family should be on board with the adoption otherwise it's not fair on the child. OP's story is an example of what happens if there are family members who disapprove of the adoption and treat the adopted child with hostility! OP owes them nothing, and as they have always rubbed in her face, she is not their family! What do they expect OP to do anyway? They made sure that Jake got all OP's inheritance money, and she has had to pay her own way through college. I would have reminded them how they had treated me, and how they took my inheritance money and tgen I would have told them to take care of their own problems. OP shouldn't be helping them. They are grown adults and should be able to find their own solutions for their problems .

My birth mother gave my up for adoption to my grandparents when I was a baby. My interactions with her until about the time I got to high school was one week visit a year. After that interaction was mostly dropped until I was in college when she needed a "short term" loan (money saved up working during the summer) so she could pay for the divorce from marriage (3 or 4 not sure) so she could get married again. I gave her a good portion of my summer savings. After a lot of reminders I got a small amount of it back. The next family event I asked for the rest of the money. First her/her husband claimed they had paid it. Then he literally threw about 1/2 the amount and said it was "paid". I talked to her one last time when she kept making demands about coming from out of state to my wedding and then ended up a no show anyway. If she had come to me with any type of request/demand to stay with me I would have said absolutely not and "lose my number". After 26 years of no contact I heard third hand that she had passed. Not even sure which state she was in.

The grandparents were absolutely EVIL. Idk what they were expecting, but I actually think OP was nicer to them than she had to be. I wouldn't care if they both lived on the streets for the rest of their lives. It's disgusting how their own children, OP's parents, had more common sense than they did. Blood is nothing. If someone steals from me, relative or not, I'd call the cops on them. Period. And, if someone is adopted, you treat them as family. Them not being related isn't something they can control. And, if you're not willing to respect someone, you shouldn't expect them to respect you. That's not how life works. As for Jake, while his actions were initially reasonable, he held onto them for longer than what makes sense. Once Jake got his house, he could've cut off his grandparents and forced them to either see OP as family, or to go to an old age home, as OP mentions that the grandparents relied on Jake financially. However, Jake never took this golden opportunity to force his grandparents to respect OP, and dug himself in a hole he had no hope of getting out of. Jake's just disappointing. He could've been a knight in shining armor, and was initially, but then blew through all of the cash and... Yeah.... OP did the right thing. She owes her grandparents nothing. If the grandparents don't want OP to be a part of their family, then that's perfectly fine. But they shouldn't expect to take the cake and eat it too, since, again, life doesn't work that way. One doesn't get a promotion for doing the bare minimum. If that were the case, everyone would be a billionaire by being a couch potato.

Your parents' will stipulated that money was for YOUR college fund. The only thing Jake was right about was that you should fight your own battles. Time to lawyer up. Your grandparents got what they deserved from Jake, and talk about some nerve to ask for your help! I don't think that was a possibility, unfortunately. First off, lawyers are NOT cheap, so... OP probably didn't have enough cash to hire one. Secondly... Suing for... What inheritance? OP's grandparents are BROKE! Any inheritance money they stole is now GONE, so... There's nothing to sue over now, unfortunately. I'm gonna have to disagree with the statement about Jake giving what the grandparents deserved. As Jake supported them financially, he could've threatened to cut off his financial support if they didn't accept OP as family. THAT would've been justice served. What Jake did wasn't what those grandparents deserved, just the second-best thing from that. He should've been able to give back OP her inheritance and show the grandparents that their actions were all for nothing. Instead, Jake took the inheritance money, and blew through it, now making it impossible for OP to get it back, as she can't sue to get back money that no longer exists, because..... It no longer exists. Everything else, though? I 100% agree with.

Brother and grandparents used all $$ his parents left to pay for his college and treated him as he did not exist!! OP made sure they had place to live without putting himself in further debt!!

Quite unfortunately the grandparents *WERE* entitled to make financial decisions for her at that time. it wasn't an inheritance -- just a bank account, under her name, which as their guardians they had the option to control. Her parents should have locked that money in bonds or something, but didn't entirely forsee just HOW cruel her grandparents were prepared to be.

It would've been cool for me as long as it's in the will that my college would've been paid for was good enough for me. I would've bided my time and stayed out of the way and finished school, after that I would've never looked back at those evil people and made something of myself especially since my college was totally paid for. I would've let those old people deal with how they treated me and never looked back period.

I don't understand this attitude and I never will. I was adopted by my dad and his mom, my grandma was one of only two people that ever treated me like I was good enough just the way I was. Family isn't about blood it's who cares about each other

It's really simple to understand, there are people who are just full of ego and craps. Not everyone are the same. Some have decency, some don't, some have low decency, some are just unique. The best way to understand the grandparents is just simply to know people like them exist and that's how they been living their life. It'll take drastic measures or events to change them...

Frankly, I am extremely surprised that OP agreed to help her "grandparents" in any way -- especially since they made sure to let her know over and over and over again since she was adopted into the family -- at 5 years old was it -- that she was not and will never be a part of their family. Being only 5 years old -- this is a cruelty beyond anything imaginable -- but then to continue to be subjected to the abuse even as she got older and became especially heinous after her parents died -- well that's just heartless -- then to top it off -- they steal her money and give it to the brother!!! I'm flabbergasted -- personally -- even though I consider myself a decent and caring person -- I wouldn't have helped any of them! I would have simply stated: "Oh, but I'm not Family -- remember?" But, that's just me -- they say that Charity begins at home -- and well, OP, in my opinion was more than Charitable by even considering in helping these ingrates -- OLD Folks home -- they got their Just Desserts! As far as the brother is concerned -- well, I suppose I would have at least done what OP did in his case -- if only to keep him from dying! Wouldn't want that kind of "blood" on my hands! Good for her, that she was able to make something out of her life without the help of these really, really, God-awful people!! Good luck to your girl -- keep up the good fight!!! Peace!!

Anyone who thinks the OP should’ve took them in after everything they did to her is nuts. They were very disrespectful took money that was rightfully hers and were emotionally and mentally abusive. I wouldn’t look out for them either. They only asked for that help because of what their grandson did. If he did right they would’ve never contacted her.

OP didn't have grandparents, by their own choice, she was exceedingly nice to her parent's parents. She didn't let them be homeless. 😢But I do question this story a bit, where I live it is cheaper to keep parents with you rather than put them in a retirement center, most of which have waiting lists to get in and are rather nice. The only close to dreary one is a geriatric convalescent home, so old and infirm. The dreary factor is that it is basically a dressed up hospital, so the few amenities outside the cafeteria are all recovery related, and patients aren't really expected to be there for more than a year at most.
